The Future of Energy #5

As I said inmy last blog, the future of energy is being reshaped and some amazing new technologies are emerging. I am sharing a few of these technologies because they are imaginative and inspiring. They show just how ingenious scientists andentrepreneurscan be when they unite for a common cause. I am no expert, so if you run across something else or have something to add, please let me know!

5) Hydro Vortex Energy

Apparently oil exploration companies have been working for years to reduce the deep underwater currents that wreak havoc on oil rigs. Dr.Bernitsas, who is an expert on minimizing these currents, had a break through moment when he realized that these sustained and powerful currents could be an excellent source of alternative energy. His company, Vortex Hydro Energy, has created a prototype device that uses the currents to oscillate and generate energy.

Although yet to be developed, it presents some benefits beyond the traditional water-based generators. It is underwater and therefore less of an eyesore, its smaller than the massive wave-power generators, and it also harvests a more reliable energy source (these happen in all slow-moving bodies of water). The picture suggests a surreal underwater city of power-generating skyscrapers. Maybe the future of energy lies below the water's surface.
