5 ways to go green when getting in that workout

go-greenWhether you are just dedicating yourself to a new workout plan or are already an avid fitness junkie, there are some ways to go green when working out. In fact getting fit is something that requires little or no extra equipment if you are creative enough and the excuse that you don't belong to a gym really is a moot point. In fact passing on the gym is one way to make your routine more eco-friendly for the sheer fact that all those machines and lights are consuming plenty of energy. Yet even if you are more inclined to pedal that stationary bike in front of the TV there are ways to make that workout of yours a touch greener.

  1. Take it to the great outdoors. Gyms get a bad rep because of the large amount of power needed to keep all of those treadmill belts and stair steppers going; you can get the same, if not better, effects by lacing up those shoes and hitting the streets instead. Running outside is going to not only going to offer you more scenic pleasure but because of the changing terrain you will burn a few more calories too.

  2. Pass on that gym towel. Laundry service, if it is provided, is just as big of a water and energy sucker in a gym as those washers in a hotel. If you bring your own towel, or if you don't need one of all that's even better, you can reduce that amount and also be sure that you don't be a sucker and use a plastic water bottle.

  3. Get creative at home. Yes, you can be your own Billy Banks or Jillian Michaels by creating your own routine right at home. You can jog in place, do jumping jacks, and other moves to get your heart rate up and constitutes as cardio activity. For strength training you can do squats, pushups, lunges, and chair dips. If you don't have traditional weights you can use cans or fill up some reusable water bottles, and there are even resistance bands that work wonders.

  4. Be your own mouse on a wheel. This may be one of the more fun ways to go green with your workouts; there are now kits that make it possible for you to recharge your household appliances and other devices by being hooked up to the back of your stationary bike. You could then conserve the energy that would have been used to repower that iPod or laptop; in fact you could be powering the very TV you are watching...talk about motivation to keep pedaling as you just HAVE to find out what happens in the latest turn of events on your reality shows.

  5. Workout instead of taking the car. A body in motion is one that can be sent off with a mission. Forgo that car trip and run to your destination, or walk if you choose, and take that bike to the store to run your errands. That is one of the more basic ways to go green in that you will be curbing those toxic greenhouse emissions.

Healthy exercise is not only great for your own well being, but now with these ways to go green via your workout you can be doing the planet a favor too!
