A New Perfect Storm: Trends in Social Change Impacted by Layoffs

Deb Berman | Tuesday 10th March 2009
layoffI have been witnessing a new perfect storm: lots of smart, talented folks out of work + difficult economic times = a massive paradigm-shifting, full scale re-evaluation of priorities and resource allocation by job seekers and entrepreneurs. It seems as if the winds have shifted in the past few weeks. Not only do we hear from socially responsible job seekers looking to apply their skills in a meaningful way, but lately we're also hearing from entrepreneurs looking to pool the collective available talent for the greater good. Last week alone I heard from two people who wanted to talk about how to tap into this newly available talent. There are lots of creative solutions brewing that will provide new opportunities for the implementation of social change. At the risk of again sounding Pollyanna, I'm inspired by the mounting evidence of this shifting tide. And, I'm interested in hearing from you if you have this bee in your bonnet about pooling the collective power driven by our new economic reality.

Hi Sara-- I think it's important for all job seekers to communicate what they bring to the company/organization. Most job seekers (of all ages!) will articulate what they're looking for and what they want rather than what they can do to meet the company's needs....

this economy drastically reduces the opportunity costs associated with pursuing careers that reap social change benefits. so much for the gordon gekkos. let's save the gecko creatures who really need our help! Education and Green are my two favorite causes. Anyone in need of marketing talent to help with green or education ventures? I'm freed up by this economy (no job) and ready to play and help.

I'm with you on this! The old paradigm never did work properly, and now lots of us are banding together to say, "The emperor has no clothes!" Let's create wonderful new things in the gaps left by the old.

That's really exciting Deb. I certainly hope the trend grows. I know so many people (often women, but that just might be my circle) who want to apply their skills to doing the right thing - from managers to technicians. I know a lot of women mid-career (40 ) who've been doing small volunteer jobs but want to do a lot more - yet find the job market hard for them. they think they are experiencing age discrimination. Any suggestions for the middle aged women who want to do work that makes a difference?

Well I for one would be THRILLED to have the opportunity to work in a field that I believed in!! I'm one of those highly skilled people (a scientist and high-level project manager) whose company shut down, so I'm looking for work now. I found my work for a corporate entity very demoralizing. I've tried to fulfill 'my ethics' on my own time--donating money (when I had a job) and writing letters to support my beliefs, and even starting an online eco-store last year http://jm.ly/XxEp9T . I've been hoping very much that my return to the corporate world can align with a cause that I believe in, and your blog gives me hope! I'll be curious to see what other people post here.
