A Visionary of Sustainable Living: Luc Schuiten

Tiffany F | Saturday 6th February 2010
Luc Schuiten's Hollow City

What if sustainable living choices were not invoked by doom and gloom statistics, but instead by a unique and inspirational vision for the future? Vegetal City and other works created by Belgium-born architect and artist, Luc Schuiten, provide a haven of stimulation for our creative minds. He creates a surreal world constructed around biomimcry's new cousin "biomimetism". His work can lift us out of our A + B = Apocalypse equation and toward A + Z9Q = Phenomenal opportunities.

Schuiten's gorgeous work expresses hope for a symbiotic relationship with nature. His vision looks at city-wide eco-transformations over time. He utilizes his creativity to respond to the growing pressure our society is putting upon its environment. His design brings us to an entirely new definition of the future. It is soft, gentle, and most importantly learns from and works with nature to invent itself. It is constantly refining and learning how to improve itself to create happy and fulfilling lives for all of the Earth's inhabitants.

Schuiten's own story started long ago, as a leading eco-architect, Schuiten designed sustainable living spaces that were off the grid in the 1970s. His designs are not rough, or executed solely for the purpose of saving energy and water, they are each carefully designed to compliment nature and the human eye. He starts his visions for city-wide change not through destruction, but instead through the addition of natural elements. Then his biomimetism slowly grows over the concrete jungle to create a system that is more in harmony with nature. There is no smart grid, because there is no grid at all by the end of his envisioned city transformations. Transportation moves away from new fuel sources and simply designs self-propelled stilts and futuristic cars that make fuel irrelevant.

As futuristic as his designs first appear, Schuiten's ideas are being used to transform three locations in Belgium to date. His ideas are not just to utilize biomimcry and solid architectural design to create healthy living spaces, his passion for aesthetics and a higher vision propel his designs to the next level. Belgium houses the EU headquarters among other noted developments, bringing a diverse range of individuals through the Country to enjoy his vision. Specifically, his work is focused on improving currently impoverished or "over-urbanized" areas.

His playful vision of the future is a breath of fresh air from our demure city scenes constructed in concrete, designed to contain and control nature. At first glance, you may wonder what this has to do with ethical consumption. Yet once you envision living in these cities making sustainable living decisions, you can start to see yourself existing in one of these wonderlands. Schuiten's "biomimetism" can be a source of inspiration to stick to your sustainable living resolutions, because an incredible future can exist for us and for future generations.

Happy sustainable world dreaming!
