Barrick Ranks on Top in Sustainability among Canadian Mining Companies

Social EnterpriseBarrick Gold Corporation of Canada has been ranked on the top in terms of sustainability performance in the Canadian mining industry. The company came out on top among the country's leading mining corporations when evaluated on 12 sustainability parameters by Corporate Knights, a recognized investment research and media organization in Toronto.

Barrick's top-tier disclosure practices and its exceptional sustainability performance across the board earned it the coveted top position in the rankings of Corporate Knights. In terms of water productivity and pay equity, Barricks performed exceptionally well. Barrick was included among the companies that link a part of the employee compensation to sustainability performance goals. Corporate Knights has called the first Canadian Mining Industry Sustainability Ranking "the most comprehensive quantitative ranking of Canadian mining companies to date."

The purpose of these sustainability rankings for the Canadian mining industry is to provide various stakeholders and investors with a clear, data-driven framework to identify the best sustainability performers in the business. The rankings were determined on the basis of an evaluation of the performance of different companies across a range of indicators, such as energy, safety, innovation, Board diversity, water and waste management, and pension fund status.

Jamie Sokalsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Barrick said: "At Barrick, our goal is to create shareholder value the right way. That is why we have embedded our commitment to responsible mining in our global business strategy. This ranking is a credit to Barrick's employees worldwide, who understand the importance of doing the right thing every day. Together, we are working hard to continue to improve safety, to manage our environmental impacts better, and to maintain our license to operate at all locations."

Barrick's recent listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the inclusion of the company among the list of "Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada" are other recognitions earned by the company, apart from its latest nod from Corporate Knights.
