Can we have 'Creative Destruction' without 'Destructive Creation'

A recent blog posted the value of seeing the global recession as an opportunity for 'creative destruction'. I agree- but let us be careful not to 'destroy Creation'!

During the East Asian crisis in the 1990s, the increase in unemployment - and the rise of the demand in the black market - led to the destruction of some of Thailand's best marine and coastal wildlife. It's never easy to blame the impoverished individuals hoping to make some cash to feed their families through cutting down mangrove trees or poaching elephants. Financial crises, historically, lead people and the planet into generally unpleasant situations.

But they don't have to. We humans still have choice; we can choose what we destroy and what we build. Maybe, instead of destroying the environment, we can destroy some of the laws that make it difficult for individual house holds to have their own solar or wind energy; or some of the mental conceptions that imply thatcontinue to pit people against theenvironment, or that neo-liberalism was a good idea for the developing world (or New Yorkers) or the notion that peoplewho live in poverty might not stillhave a great deal to offer the rest of the world. Humans have created the mental frameworks that have trapped us. Can we learn to destroy the right ones?
