Changing the world, one film at a time
Yesterday, Dane posted on some of the wonders of social media for making serious change. Today, I found out about some other cool organizations from the developing world which are using media to create peace - most of it is not social media, but it certainly qualifies as good work. It empowers people to deal with poverty and claim their human rights. If you've never experienced claiming your own human rights, let me tell you - its an experience no one can ever take away from you, even if they deny your rights.
Dalan Teleserial (Nepal): 'Dalan is a television soap opera which promotes equal rights for people from the Dalit community. Dalits are sometimes treated as second-class citizens in Nepal, and this series has sought to portray Nepali society from the Dalit perspective'. http://www.jagaranmedia.org.np/
B'Tselem (Israel): 'B'Tselem distributes cameras among Palestinian men, women and children in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The project gives Palestinians a voice and a non-violent tool to address the human rights violations they experience on a daily basis.' http://www.btselem.org/English/index.asp (Winner of One World Media Award)
Then there is this super-cool youth, music and HIV prevention in post-war Sierra Leone (Sierra Leone): 'This project uses music, drama, and young people's creativity to promote HIV prevention and tackle HIV stigma. It has also trained local people to make animated music videos on these themes.' http://www.hivsierraleone.co.uk/
