Conspicuous consumption hijacks eco-labeling

rangeI was sitting in the pub the other day and noticed a very interesting sticker on the windshield of the Land Rover just outside. It read, "First 40,000 miles offset with carbon emissions."

Wow.

Whatever your opinion is of the effectiveness of carbon offsetting, the irony of this scheme is hard to ignore. Rather than using eco-labels to identlfy the best environmental options, it has been hijacked by conspicuous consumption to make Land Rovers even more 'cool'.
