Earth what? Day?

Dane Pflueger | Tuesday 9th June 2009
42-16875340Today I learned that last Friday was World Earth Day. OOps.

Now, I know I was buried in work but, I do clearly remember hearing about Obama's Cairo speech, the Tiananmen Anniversary, and Stephen Colbert's plan to air this week's shows from Baghdad. Shouldn't World Earth Day mean something to most people?

As it turns out there are two Earth Days, the other one is on April 22nd; maybe thats some of the problem. But maybe the very concept of dedicating 2 days days of the year to the Earth is an even bigger part of the problem. Isn't there something about Earth that resists Day-izing?

Perhaps now that people are aware of the big days that are celebrated highlighting different causes, the days as such may not remain to be very meaningful. But they certainly did help people be aware of their significance at the initial days of tooth cutting of environmentalism.

Right, I agree. I almost feel like its taboo to 'talk trash' on the days thing but really, Earth Day/World Environment Day just sounds so shallow. I am not sure what the purpose is exactly. Is it a day to remember the earth? Surely if we have forgotten its too late! Is it a day to celebrate the earth? That sounds like good plan, but do we do this by buying a card or like driving to the coast for the weekend? Surely that's missing the point. What other purpose could the days serve? I know I am being pretty pessimistic, sorry!

well, of the two, i prefer earth day. but nevertheless, i don't do anythign for it. as a kid it was cool, i remember big parks filled with people and puppets. But now... besides, everyday is earth day, right? But really, i wonder if its a good idea to try to make special 'days' to celebrate something. is it just a marketing device? Presidents day, Labor Day - most big 'Days' don't end up really meaning something.

April 22nd is celebrated as "Earth Day', whereas 5th of June is celebrated as 'World Environment Day'. In the middle of nineties, in those early days of environmental activism, the later got more precedence over the former . However,in recent years,'Eearth day' seems to have drawn more attention than 'World Environment day'. Perhaps it is due to how people like to relate to the cause _ perhaps 'mother earth'is even more a familiar term than the word 'environment' .
