Lauralee Moss' Introduction in the Education Channel

lauralee-mossHello. My name is Lauralee Moss and I have worked in the public school setting for a decade. My expanded interest in education began with my my master's project, when I researched the organizational habits of sophomores in high school. I found that most of them lacked common sense approaches, such as bringing a pencil to class, dating notes (or even taking notes) and keeping returned papers for later review. Simple tools such as organization (that are required for school) escape students. Then, teachers spend time teaching basic skills instead of teaching content. Schools cannot be a child's full service station, teaching morals, responsibility and other life skills. Schools should reinforce positive behavior, but the groundwork must be laid before school.

For parents and educators to work in a partnership, all must know the importance of education and schools' procedures. My core belief is that education must saturate all parts of a child's life; learning should not end on a predetermined day in May or at 3:00 every day. Society should understand the education system and education jargon. Educators need to "clue in" parents on their methods and reasoning.

When I saw Justmeans advertise for a writer in a newly developed Education channel, I jumped at the possibility. Education is more than the root of a sustainable world, it is the seed, water and sun. Our culture sees the classroom as a socialization scene or right of passage. I hope to bring to Justmeans the triumphs in the educational world. I hope to gain momentum toward changing education for the better.

I am thrilled to share my passions with the Justmeans audience. Together we can start a discussion that works toward making education a sustainable part of American life.
