As a media professional, it has been interesting for me to witness and study how social media networking re-defined journalism over the past few years. I'm a news producer at Tribune. Prior to this I was working at a PBS station in Chicago and have also been a radio host at Chicago Public Radio and Asian Broadcasting Network and have experience working with major media organisations in Pakistan. ...

Let's friend each other!

saman-sheikhWell, here we are, by some effortless subconscious activity and series of steps that led us to be communicating over this forum. I take pleasure in the simple elegance of the social media networking process and shall be your resource in this domain, here at Justmeans. Ask, and I shall seek for you. Together, we'll make it worth its while!

There is something magical about waking up to your friends' faces on Facebook. Well, I'm always a bit surprised that Facebook isn't an actual word in the dictionary by now. My writing software introduces a "thin red line" underneath the word warning me to rectify this error. Facebook- a mistake? So every morning, with my eyes barely open, squinting at a glaring screen, I pay my respects to a virtual world that mirrors my actual world. Within seconds, I am able to whisk through information that would've taken a considerable amount of time or may never have reached me at all in those oh-so-difficult-pre-social media days. Be it good news, bad news, world news or ridiculous videos I would never seek for myself, it's all there to be had. And, there is always more to be had. Any doubts, anyone?

With all the connections you can make over these networks, there is no excuse to remain uninformed and ignorance is not a blissful state to be in. Ever wonder why that was such a famous quote? You see, my all-time favourite site used to be BBC news but now I can "like" it on some social media platform and get it all in one place. So how many of you would agree that these social media networking tools and the craziness that surrounds us is actually the beginning of a new revolution? A beneficial one, if we are able to grasp this phenomenon and use it to our advantage. Which, is just what I am hoping to accomplish here at Justmeans.

Before I begin, I was stoked that Justmeans allows me to link all of my social media accounts and what I wasn't able to do with say, Twitter, can be done over here! I can simultaneously post important information to several networks without having to spend any extra time. One of the major grievances against social media networking is that people spend a huge chunk of their lives glued to computer screens or razing away those fingers on fancy phones. Our attention-deprived society is losing the ability to focus. But really, it is all about how you do it and what you get out of it. Just how we witnessed other media evolve, we are only beginning to see some of its effects. I have been all over the media. I have worked in print, radio and television and am through and through a vocal individual who will speak up to save to the world, save a cause, save fashion, save your kitten- you name it. I will speak up! And, I found the new, improved and mostly inexpensive way to do so.

As a woman who likes to shop (never trust a woman who doesn't like to shop), I love the word 'free' and honestly, it is only in America where you are exposed to the power of and the value of anything 'free.' Hey, it's a free country! As we speak, I see a faraway sign in the display window of The Body Shop across the street and all I see is the word "free" written with huge letters in orange and pink circles: "Buy 3, get 2 FREE and Buy 2, get 1 FREE." See, it really isn't free. It comes with a price. Just something to think about when you have over 500 free applications on your iPhone and no idea of what to do with them. Or, what happens with the businesses that are letting you have a piece of their fortune and how they use social media networking to perpetuate their cause. So we will also be exploring how this is a two-way street where each can take home something of value.

I am a public media professional and take pride in the power of the media to make a difference. Partnering with Justmeans to embark on this writer-reader relationship, I will also ensure that I bring to you a message of social responsibility, so we bring a positive change to the world around us. My day is almost over and I shall take one last look at how everyone else's day went. Tomorrow, let's wake up and smell the coffee. Only, I'm too lazy to set a timer to my coffee machine. Besides, you know where I'll be first thing in the morning!
