Responsible Vacation- Just another Walk in the Park
The term, "responsible vacation" has lofty requirements, but there is no mandate that a responsible vacation must be laborious. Something as pleasant as seeking an urban oasis, or "park" as most may know it, can certainly qualify as a responsible vacation.
Chicago may be known for its legendary deep dish pizzas, but the windy city is also known for Millennium Park. The iconic silver architectural structure is recognizable around the world, and its dedication to green education is slowly gaining popularity as well. For a well- rounded responsible vacation, participate in one of Millennium Park's many park activities, such as this month's Lurie Garden Seasonal Walk. Dropping in on one of these community activities will not only help to incorporate physical fitness awareness without damaging the environment, but it will also provide a chance to mingle with the locals- a requirement of any good travel experience. The educational component of a trip to Millennium Park comes in the form of lecture series and workshops offered throughout the year. The lasting effect of education about preserving our environment will prove to be beneficial as the word about sustainable living continues to spread. This month's lecture series is entitled, "What Is Living in Your Soil- and Why Should You Care?" An area biologist will explain the truth and biology of what makes up the soil in our own backyards. The conjunction of educational programs and being able to lie down in a well- preserved urban green space makes Millennium Park a great responsible vacation destination.
Stanley Park is one of Vancouver, Canada's most beloved local attractions. This full service park has something for everyone, and promotes sustainability along the way. This impressive green space covers over 1,000 acres. Park loungers and plant lovers alike enjoy the diversity of greenery throughout Stanley Park. The park also offers an array of natural attractions such as beaches, lakes, and trails. One of the most incredible sights to see in person is the Hollow Tree. Tourists have been taking pictures in front of the unusual tree for decades. Up the responsible vacation ante by participating in one of the many volunteer opportunities, sponsored by the Stanley Park Ecological Society. Volunteers can choose to roll up their sleeves and get dirty alongside the members of the Society, or they can participate in one of the educational programs present by the Society for a rewarding park experience. Another sustainable option is Canada's first sustainable brewery, Turning Point Brewery. You're hard-pressed to find a more refreshing way to enjoy a responsible vacation.
Seize this time of the year, as it presents the best weather for frolicking in the grass amongst the changing leaf colors. There is no better time to get to some of the world's greatest green spaces.
