SC Johnson Awarded for Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
SC Johnson has received the prestigious Torchbearer Award from the Wisconsin Sierra Club for the company's commitment to renewable energy and a sustainable environment. The Torchbearer Award is bestowed upon decision makers that display a commitment to promote legislation, regulations or practices that help protect the environment.
SC Johnson received the honor because of its new addition of two 415-ft. wind turbines at its manufacturing facility in Waxdale. These turbines are the latest in a series of renewable energy production investments made by the company at its biggest global manufacturing facility at 2.2 million square feet. The wind turbines, which are expected to become operational by the end of the year, will enable Waxdale to generate on average 100 percent of its electrical energy on-site. Nearly 60 percent of this energy will come from renewable sources.
Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President - Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability of SC Johnson, said: "We are honored by this recognition and salute the Sierra Club for their laudable efforts to improve Wisconsin's environment. The Torchbearer Award highlights our commitment to the environment, sustainability and our global leadership in making the communities in which we do business better places."
The annual awards of the John Muir Chapter are given to volunteers of Sierra Club, community volunteers, civil servants that have contributed to environmental sustainability in Wisconsin, and businesses that follow environmentally responsible practices. The series of awards for which the recipients are nominated, include the Good Citizen Award, JJ & Pat Werner Award, Merit Award, New Activist Award, Torchbearer Award and Wildflower Award.
Shahla Werner, Director, Sierra Club - John Muir Chapter, said: "SC Johnson is a good neighbor and corporate citizen to southeastern Wisconsin residents, providing career opportunities and strong leadership on sustainability, from their support for expanding transit service to their commitment to renewable energy as demonstrated by their new Waxdale wind turbine project. We hope to see many other Wisconsin companies follow suit in coming years by taking similar ambitious measures to reduce climate change threats."
