Social Media Events: Social Good Summit in New York on September 20th

This Monday Mashable and 92Y are hosting one of this years most prominent social media events dedicated to the topic of social good. The Social Good Summit will focus on how new media can be used to bring awareness to some of the worlds most challenging problems. It's the kickoff for UN Week, running Monday the 20th till Friday the 24th. The goals of the summit are to raise awareness for the Millennium Development Goals, create opportunities for public engagement, and showcase solutions and innovative approaches.
The Millennium Development Goals are set and agreed upon to help defeat poverty, hunger, disease, lack of shelter, and gender inequality around the world. The goals were established in 2000 and are being acted upon to be reached by the year 2015. Some of the goals are very ambitious and include reducing the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day in half, eliminating two thirds of the child mortality rate of those under five years old, achieve universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment to those who need it and increasing the literacy rate of people between the ages of 15-24.
Mondays gathering will be just one of the many social media events for social good happening around the world during the week. Mashable has declared September 23rd as Social Good day and there are currently over 1500 meetups that are scheduled to help celebrate. The #socialgood hashtag is being used to unite supporters via Twitter and YouTube. The Facebook page for SocialGood can be found at facebook.com/socialgood.
