Won't You Light My (Carbon-Neutral) Candle?
Ruchira Shah | Friday 27th March 2009
Many of you might be participating in the Earth Hour festitivities this Saturday, and are thus, planning a nice dinner by candlelight.Candles are romantic and fun, and personally, I adore having a nice candlelit dinner with some good friends, good food, and good wine. However, most candles are also made of paraffin. And as such they can also be polluting. In fact, candles might produce 10 times the carbon emissions of a lightbulb. So this Earth Hour, pick a carbon neutral candle such as beeswax or soy for your candlelight dinner. And enjoy! |

Ayo Maat 30 March 2009 Good idea. I missed it. I need light to see. I did not have any soy candles and as a vegan I don't use beewswax. I only have the tea candles. They are probbaly paraffin wax candles. I have not purchased any more soy candles. Soy candles are ridiculously priced and unless scented with essential oils have a lingering odor that is mildly unpleasant. I use a wheelchair. Turning off the lights is simple for people who have no mobility limitations and where light switches and control panel switches are accessible. It may also be simple for blind people who don't need light to see (i.e. some people are legally blind-have some vision, but it is low; others are totally blind).
Persons who are disabled and use durable medical or adaptive equipment leave big carbon footprints. I am working with Green Think Tank for the Disability Community to remedy that. Any suggestions are welcome. |
