Description & Responsibilities

Ceres’ Corporate Program is looking to hire a Manager with particular knowledge of the financial services sector including asset management and insurance companies. This is a full-time position, based in our Boston office and will report to a Director of the Corporate Program.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Manage relationships and projects involving Ceres member companies and Ceres’ coalition organizations, as well as some prospective Ceres companies. The Ceres company network includes companies from approximately ten sectors. While this position will be focused on primarily working with companies in the financial services sector, additional sectors may also be included.

Plan, coordinate and facilitate external stakeholder dialogues for Ceres member companies. This position will organize and lead ongoing dialogues bringing investors, environmental groups and other public interest groups together with companies to provide feedback on the company’s sustainability performance and disclosure.

Prepare and present both written and oral analysis on the sustainability performance and disclosure of member and non-member companies. Demonstrating analytical abilities and understanding of key attributes of corporate sustainability leadership. Benchmark companies in specific sectors using the 21^st Century Corporation Roadmap as well as other frameworks.

Sustain and enhance Ceres’ expertise in transparency and disclosure, including the Global Reporting Initiative as an accountability and engagement tool for companies and other organizations in North America.

Design and implement workshops, webinars/conference calls, newsletters and other multi-media communications to reach companies and stakeholder groups with timely information on Ceres’ programs and sustainability priorities. This will be primarily web-based.

Conduct research and analysis and develop briefings and presentations for the Vice President, Directors and other Ceres executives.

Assist with planning the Ceres annual conference program and other events.

Support other program teams (such as the Investor Program, Communications, Development) as needed to accomplish organizational objectives.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in business, environment, law or public policy or related field preferred.

Five years or more of direct experience working on sustainability and corporate responsibility issues in the corporate, investor and/or non-profit sectors, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years relevant experience.

Knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues and an understanding of corporations (including corporate reporting and business strategy tools), the socially responsible investment community, and the environmental and sustainability movements.

Experience in North American context is strongly preferred, while understanding the broader international context of sustainability.

Demonstrated ability to bring an advocacy perspective to both analysis and corporate engagement and to make clear recommendations for actions and next steps.

Substantial expertise on environmental and/or social issues.

Demonstrated strong project management skills of multiple, complex projects

Planning expertise and delivering projects on deadline and within time and resource budgets. Attention to detail is required.

Effective presentation style as well as strong speaking and written communication skills.

Sound judgment, sensitivity to diverse constituencies, excellent interpersonal skills, proven ability to demonstrate initiative and motivation.

Successful record of organizing multiple projects, coordinating and facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogues, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Manage relationships and projects involving the 70+ Ceres companies and 100 + coalition organizations, as well as some prospective Ceres companies. The Ceres company network includes companies from approximately ten sectors and this position will be focused on primarily working with companies in the energy sector including electric power, oil and gas, and transportation.
Lead the relationships and facilitate stakeholder dialogues with companies. This position will lead ongoing dialogues, which include investors, environmental groups and other public interest groups to discuss corporate sustainability performance and disclosure.
Assess the performance of sustainability results and disclosures from companies and demonstrate analytical abilities and understanding of key attributes of corporate sustainability leadership. Demonstrated ability to bring an advocacy perspective to both analysis and corporate dialogues will be viewed as beneficial.
Develop the strategy and objectives for Ceres’ work with this group of companies on a one to three year planning cycle and ensure alignment with the expectations of the Ceres Roadmap and organizational priorities. Capture and communicate the specific impacts of the engagement process.
Implement, and possibly design, tools for engaging Ceres companies on their sustainability performance including initiatives and projects, which support the impact and uptake of the 21^st Century Corporation Roadmap for Sustainability.

Contribute to meeting revenue commitments of the team through supporting fundraising initiatives with individual, corporate and/or foundation contacts.

Qualifications

Position Purpose

The Sustainability Measurement and Analytics (SMA) Manager is responsible for the collection, reporting and analysis of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) data across the McDonald’s System to enable the development of credible and robust global sustainability targets and measurement. The SMA Manager will work with the various business functions to aggregate of sustainability metrics to demonstrate progress towards sustainability targets. The Data Manager will serve as the key liaison with the IT project managers in the development of a new data consolidation approach/system, will be the key contact with our third-party auditors in the eventual assurance of our sustainability data, and will work closely with the Director of Sustainability and Integration to support sustainability reporting.

This individual has expertise in data collection, with a strong ability to pull data from disparate sources and analyze the data, and to tell a story from the data. This individual also has the ability to use the data to formulate ideas and create presentations and other communications vehicles to express the ideas brought forth by the data and to bring insights to leaders within McDonald’s in order to assess how we are growing our business by making a positive difference in society.

Principal Accountabilities

Develops and oversees McDonald’s Sustainability and CSR data collection and analysis strategy

Develops innovative research techniques and databases which will help with scenario planning and materiality analysis
Uses qualitative, quantitative, multivariate and modeling techniques and approaches to evaluate sustainability and CSR data
Coordinates with the Sustainability Reporting Manager to ensures integrity of sustainability and CSR data for eventual third-party assurance
Accountable for ensuring all initiatives within the portfolio are completed on-time, on budget and consistent with requirements and objectives

Experience

BA: in engineering, computer science, mathematics, marketing research, statistics, economics or related field required.
MBA a plus
5+ years of relevant work experience required.
Good working knowledge of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and other global standards like ISO26000 and the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Hands-on data management and data analysis experience, including database building, data mining, and multivariate analysis; predictive modeling techniques a plus
Understands the systems responsible for the current collection of sustainability and CSR data supports measurement tools, processes and reporting tools
Comfort working on-site in a fast-paced, team environment and with global clients and customers
Ability to transform complex analytics into a simple, visual story to influence decision makers

• Assure environmental accountability through implementation of environmental sustainability, quality and efficiency relative to Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001). Identify local and systemic opportunities for corrective action required by regulation and Company policy and procedures.
• Manage, at any one time, environmental projects in excess of $2 million. Project types include underground storage tank (UST) removal, contamination assessment and remediation; asbestos and lead survey and abatement; storm water pollution prevention; hazardous materials management and supplemental environmental projects as necessary. Responsible for development of project scope, bid solicitation, contract administration, funding authorization preparation and accounting.
• Interface with appropriate Company representatives related to Superfund liability, environmental citations and claims, requests from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and special projects. Tasks include research, strategy, negotiation and settlement of claims.
• Review capital projects for environmental impact and assure that environmental requirements are addressed during the project planning process through interaction with the appropriate members of the Supply Chain and local management. • Work closely with Product Supply System, Procurement, Safety, Risk Management, Operational Excellence, Quality and other departments to identify cost saving opportunities through waste minimization, pollution prevention, energy efficiency and water conservation.

Conduct audits to evaluate vendor operations for compliance with Company policy, regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

POSITION OVERVIEW

BSR seeks an experienced manager for its operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) to develop and implement a donor development strategy as well as to design, monitor and implement development projects in collaboration with a global team of sustainability experts.

BSR implements a wide variety of programs with support from both private foundations and bilateral as well as multilateral agencies to further our mission of creating a just and sustainable world. We work with funders such as the World Bank/IFC, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US Department of State, the British Consulate General in Guangzhou, the MacArthur Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Rockefeller Foundation, David & Lucile Packard Foundation, and GE Foundation. Our grant-funded initiatives are global in scope and serve an important role in BSR’s efforts to promote corporate social responsibility thus complementing our work with the private sector. In recent years, grant-funded projects make up 15-25% of BSR’s annual revenues.

Most of our development projects seek to harness the organizational, operational, technological and financial acumen of the private sector in the pursuit of more environmentally and socially sustainable development. We seek to create projects that contribute to sustainable business objectives and align with the Millennium Development Goals and other key development metrics. As such, it is critical that the manager thrives in an organizational environment that connects the private sector with the sustainability and development agendas.

Our current and future grant-funded initiatives focus on opportunities to: 1) promote human/labor rights and empowerment; 2) improve environmental performance, including resources efficiency and climate change; 3) advance social and economic development opportunities along global supply chains, including sustainable consumption and production as well as private sector engagement on base of the pyramid (BOP) models.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Based in BSR’s Paris or newly established Copenhagen office, the Manager will play a key role in devising, implementing and managing BSR’s donor development strategy in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Whereas the initial, primary objective will be obtaining new grant funding in the EMEA region to build a robust development project portfolio, the Manager will also be involved in managing projects, including implementation and monitoring of projects in developing countries.

Donor Funding: The Manager will lead efforts to develop new donor relationships and secure funding in the EMEA-region. The Manager will work in concert with the Copenhagen-based EMEA VP and the Director of Partnership Development (PD) based in New York to drive the BSR Partnership Development strategy forward, formulating new initiatives that synthesize BSR program interests with the funding priorities of target donors, including the European Commission, key bi- and multilateral donors and both private and corporate foundations.

External Representation: The Manager will represent BSR to an external audience by: meeting with representatives from target donors; identifying and forming beneficial external partnerships; attending & presenting at industry conferences; and writing occasional publications.

Project implementation: Though primarily focused on sourcing new grant opportunities with European donors, the Manager will also play a role in implementing project work funded by European and other donors, most likely in Africa and the Middle East.

Internal collaboration: In concert with the New York based PD Director, the Manager will work to implement the global PD strategy; building cohesion and support across BSR around donor funded projects and contributing to the learning and development of the organization more broadly.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in economic development, development studies, geography, political science, or related field;

8 -12 years of relevant professional experience, including field work in a developing or emerging market country; experience of fieldwork in Middle East and Africa preferred; experience in a Junior Professional Officer (JPO) program or similar in a developing country a plus;

Proven and demonstrable track record of success in working with European donors to successfully obtain donor/grant funding; experience in bidding for tender contracts a plus;

Understanding of the grant and tender application processes with the European Commission (with preference for direct experience);

Ability to drive strategic work, and engage colleagues around the collective implementation;

Experience managing multiple, disparate projects simultaneously;

Fluent both in written and conversational English and another major European language; additional language skills, in particular French, is a plus;

Excellent proposal writing skills

Well-developed interpersonal skills for high-level interaction with potential donors;

Excellent presentation and facilitation skills;

Ability to undertake business travel 30% of time;

Career Development

BSR has a performance management cycle designed to provide each employee with a clear sense of their performance expectations for achievement of our mission and organizational goals. The process consists of annual goal setting, monthly manager chats, mid-year performance check-ins, and an annual performance review. During the goal setting process, employees consult with their manager to establish a professional development plan with needs addressed through a variety of on the job opportunities such as work assignments, mentoring, cross functional projects, facilitation and coaching. Additional outside training programs, educational courses or other suitable learning experiences, are available with approval from the director of human resources and the manager.

Compensation: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with skill, knowledge and experience level and the constraints of a non-profit business organization. Candidate with more experience and proven track record of donor development and funding may be considered at an Associate Director level.

Position Overview

The Office Manager will provide reception and general office support duties for BSR’s San Francisco office with an emphasis on excellent customer service. As the first point of contact for visitors, the Office Manager sets the overall tone of the experience with BSR of many of our member companies and clients. This role also provides the oversight to ensure that we have a smooth, efficient and organized office space. Therefore, a strong commitment to professionalism and quality service combined with the ability to multitask and be flexible is essential.

Responsibilities

Customer Service

Greets and assists all incoming visitors.

Responds to and directs all incoming telephone calls.

Responds to general inquiries through email, BSR website, voice mail and in person.

Creates and posts all welcome signage for BSR visitors and new employee hires.

Works with Human Resources to provide new employee orientation.

Office Administration

Collaborates with other BSR office managers/coordinators to ensure processes are communicated and aligned globally (e.g., disaster preparedness, emergency call tree, organizational chart, visiting BSR employees, etc).

Maintains office efficiency by planning and implementing office systems, layouts, and equipment procurement including coordination of “hot-desking” process and procedure for office.

Manages BSR correspondences including sorting and dispersing incoming mail and faxes and processes all outgoing mail.

Orders and distributes all office supplies and distribution of staff business cards. Keeps supplies organized and reviews items to keep ahead of supply needs, removing unwanted supplies as needed.

Manages vendor communications to ensure day to day needs are met (e.g., office close dates).

Orders, manages and reviews all hard copy subscriptions including books, periodicals, and newspapers.

Keeps Human Resources informed by reviewing and analyzing special reports; summarizing information; identifying trends

Works with HR and Finance, performs cost analysis to ensure that BSR receives good pricing on office supplies and services from vendors. Makes recommendations for changes when appropriate.

Serves as first point of contact for building management and attends quarterly tenant meetings.

Provides general distribution of staff and building announcements via email.

Provides central point of contact for retention, protection, retrieval, transfer, and disposal of organization records.

Works to monitor workstations and common spaces (conference rooms, kitchen, staff lounge, etc,) to ensure professional environment is maintained.

As a small organization, you can expect ad-hoc and project work as well.

Human Resources and Finance

Delivers project support for Human Resources including scheduling of candidates, coordinating onboarding for new staff, and other projects as needed.

Provides direct support for Human Resources and Finance as directed.

Manages all aspects of office events.

Maintain daily incoming check log and provide checks to Finance for deposit.

Maintains incoming invoice log and provide check requests to directors for approval, provide monthly summary to Finance.

Maintains petty cash account and documentation and provide monthly reconciliation to Finance.

Qualifications

4 plus years of equivalent level administrative support experience preferred

BA degree preferred

Must show proven ability to take initiative, problem solve, respond to changes and identify solutions.

Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is required.
