Research and Markets, CSR, Dublin - Is it hard for you to sort your recycling? Do all of those messy categories of "plastic" and "paper" get jumbled in your head, so you just chuck everything in the trash? If this sounds like you, stay out of Japan. The forward thinking Japanese are the world's most advanced recyclers, with each household sorting no fewer than 12 separate categories of recyclable materials. The nation's strict recycling regulations are having a profound impact on the market, causing consumers and manufacturers to demand lighter, simpler packaging.
Slate, consumer sustainability, New York - Fuel conscious swimming pool owners might want to think about solar pool covers to save energy. Slate's Daniel Gross experimented with the technology this summer and found that he was able to keep his pool at its normal temperature and saved 600 gallons of propane over the course of the summer, which translates to $1,100 dollars in reduced expense.
New York Times, environment, Florida - The USS Oriskany is quickly becoming home to an amazing array of fish, and the New York Times has some great photos from under the sea. The government intentionally sank the 888 foot aircraft carrier in 2006 to create an artificial reef off the coast of Florida. Check out the photos to see an alien world of barracudas, polyps, and other sea creatures now enjoying the new home the ship provides.
BBC, environment, Juneau - A new fight is brewing over proposals to open the Alaskan shoreline to oil exploration. Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin put the spotlight on the issue during her acceptance speech for the nomination at the Republican National Convention, and many are calling for increased offshore drilling. Any offshore exploration approved today will not have an effect on oil prices until at least the year 2030.
Marketwatch, CSR, Basking Ridge - A new report released by Verizon finds that carbon management, corporate social responsibility, and shareholder value are intimately linked.
