How would you like a 54.55% return on your investment portfolio? The NYC Investment Divas who participated in the ING-Girls Inc. Investment Challenge can boast about the solid results they delivered managing a $50,000 virtual portfolio the past three years as part of an integrated investment- and economic-literacy curriculum.
On Aug. 16, Rob Leary, president and COO, ING U.S., presented a $25,000 “big check” representing their scholarship award during a celebration event in Brooklyn attended by the girls and their families, Girls Inc. staff, ING U.S. representatives and special guests. “Our latest research from the ING Retirement Research Institute indicates that on average, women are significantly less prepared for retirement than men. I believe the ING-Girls Inc. Investment Challenge can help level that playing field,” said Rob. “We are so proud of the New York City Investment Divas. They are well on their way to securing a better financial future.”
A special thanks to ING U.S. Investment Management employee volunteers, Kristy Finnegan, senior analyst, and Kristin Manning, assistant portfolio manager and analyst, for not only helping the girls understand investment principles, but also serving as mentors to the girls. The girls entered the ING-Girls Inc. Investment Challenge with little to no knowledge of money management, but at the end of the three years they were empowered to lead within their teams, propose investment ideas and challenge themselves to present publicly.
“The ING-Girls Inc. Investment Challenge builds on our long and deep tradition of equipping girls to overcome economic barriers to growing up healthy, educated, and independent with research-based, hands-on programs,” said Judy Vredenburgh, president and CEO of Girls Inc. “Thank you, to our special partner, ING U.S., for opening the doors of opportunity, believing that every girl can take command of her financial future, and expanding our girls’ horizons.”
