FedEx in UN Secretary General‘s Report: Improving Global Road Safety
Published in August, the latest UN Secretary-General‘s report on improving global road safety includes mention of FedEx. The report is available by clicking here and is attached below. It provides an update on key initiatives road safety nonprofits have underway around the world to help combat the loss of 1.3 million lives each year in road traffic crashes – including the lives 500 children every day. In addition to the loss of life as many as 50 million people are injured in road traffic crashes each year.
The report is organized around five road safety pillars:
- Road Safety Management (infrastructure technologies and safety management)
- Safer Roads and Mobility
- Safer Vehicles
- Safer Road Users
- Post-Crash Response
FedEx has focused its efforts with international road safety nonprofits in support of pillars 2 and 4. The nonprofits FedEx supports are shown here, relative to the pillars supported:
Pillar 2: Safer Roads and Mobility:
- Safe Kids Worldwide: Infrastructure improvements in 10 countries
- IndiaRAP: Infrastructure improvements across India
- Amend: Infrastructure improvements in Namibia and Zambia
Pillar 4: Safer Road Users
- Safe Kids Worldwide: Walk This Way child pedestrian safety work in 10 countries
- Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety: Multiple projects including donkey cart reflective initiative and other projects and NGO capacity building initiatives impacting 200 road safety NGOs in 90 countries
- iRAP: Star Ratings for Schools app. 600 schools assessed around the world during beta test
- Youth for Road Safety: Star Ratings for Schools. Training the next generation of road safety advocates
- Amend: Star Ratings for Schools leveraged related to pedestrian safety around schools, and speed reduction initiative making it safer for both child and adult pedestrians around all schools in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia
- World Resources Institute: Training thousands of Bus Rapid Transit drivers across Brazil, Mexico, India and China
- University of North Carolina, Highway Safety Research Center, Walk Friendly Communities: Promoting safer communities across the US
