Legg Mason Introduces New Global Education Benefits

Legg Mason, Inc. has introduced a new educational benefit for global employees. Beginning immediately, employees can receive reimbursement for anything they want to learn. We call this program SEED (skills, education, enrichment and development).

“Legg Mason is focused on growth, and we believe that a hallmark of growth is a learning mindset,” said Patty Lattin, Legg Mason’s Chief Human Resources Officer. “This benefit, which we believe is unique in the asset management industry, is one of the many ways we’re working to hire and grow the best talent.”

Most companies — if they provide tuition reimbursement at all — limit it to four-year degrees or graduate studies that reflect employees’ expected career paths. But new generations of employees — who are more diverse than ever and less likely to follow the traditional career ladder — are augmenting traditional classroom education with faster-moving learning paths like boot camps, nano-degrees, micro-masters, open-source learning and other options.

In the U.S., full-time employees are eligible for reimbursement up to $8,000 for any education related to growth at Legg Mason, and $300 for activities related to personal enrichment, such as a cooking or art history classes. In the U.K., the limits are GBP6,000 and GBP240, respectively. Comparable limits are in place in Europe, Hong Kong, Australia and other locations where Legg Mason has staff.
