The Safeway Foundation donated $100,000 to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) during a presentation at their Oak Harbor, Wash., store grand opening on Friday, May 22.

The Safeway Foundation had said it wanted to make a surprise donation to a local military organization during the grand opening that would benefit the service men and women at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and other veterans. It also noted that it would be a way to honor the people of Oak Harbor and highlight the deep military ties within the community.

Capt. Mike Nortier, Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of Safeway to NMCRS. “The donation will help countless Navy Sailors and their families, Nortier said. “It is truly humbling to be part of such a great community.”
