Ceres Calls for Unity and Defending Our Democracy

Jan 7, 2021 3:40 PM ET

Ceres CEO and President Mindy Lubber released the following statement in response to yesterday’s horrific assault on our democracy and government, as armed extremists incited by Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol.

It was a tragic day in our nation’s history. Ceres condemns the act of domestic terrorism and violence incited by Donald Trump and carried out by his followers. We denounce the white privilege and white supremacy that was grossly on display at our nation’s capital.

The rioters tried to rip apart our democracy and upend our fair election process using falsehoods, intimidation and violence, but they did not succeed.

The values of our democracy prevailed and will continue to do so. Still, we must take swift action to preserve and protect our democratic institutions.

First, President Trump must be immediately removed from office. Second, all of our elected leaders must graciously accept the electoral college results in order to ensure a smooth transition of power on January 20. Third, our elected leaders need to tell their constituents to accept the election results and to refrain from pointless objection and violent acts. Finally, those who were responsible for the assault on our democracy and government need to be held accountable. These actions are essential for us to begin to heal as a country.

Despite yesterday’s events, there are signs of hope.  As the rioters were storming the U.S. Capitol, we welcomed the first Black American and the first Jewish American from Georgia to the U.S. Senate. President-elect Joe Biden has nominated a team to lead his administration’s important work to fight systemic racism and the environmental injustices exacerbated by the climate crisis. With the victories in Georgia, there will now be a smooth road to confirmation.

On day one, Ceres will work with the Biden-Harris administration and our newly elected to find common ground across the political aisle.

Together, we must heal the nation and restore leadership, peace and civility in our democracy and our government. We must end the racial, gender and economic injustices and inequalities that fuel the divisions in our society and build a more equitable and just world. We remain committed more than ever to this shared vision. We hope you will stand with us.
