Last year’s sales at Charitybuzz's closed with an incredible bang, where over 50,000 once-in-a-lifetime experiences were auctioned to raise a $100 million. The lots ranged from a speaking role in American Hustle to a SpaceX tour with Elon Musk or a private tennis lesson with Rafael Nadal. While special mentions go to Peyton Manning, Beyoncé, Steven Tyler, Sergio Ramos, Tony Hsieh, J.J. Abrams, Lori Greiner, Paul Haggis, Mariano Rivera and Daymond John who each had a single auction experience which raised more than $20,000 for charity.
The site saw hundreds of high-profile names from Reese Witherspoon to One Direction hit the online auction block, but 2013’s real superstars were tech and business icons, claiming almost half of the top spots on the list. Apple CEO Tim Cook brought in the highest bid of the year at $610,000. Funds have benefited a diverse list of organisations, from small schools to international charities, working to alleviate poverty, champion equality, educate children globally, eradicate disease and protect the planet.
Some of the notable dining opportunities were a dinner for four with President Clinton, which finally went at $110,000, or a power lunch with Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, or there was dinner with Julia Roberts or perhaps a spot of lunch with Harrison Ford.
Luxury automobiles, yachts, travel (you could have flown on Virgin America to meet Sir Richard Branson for a bottle of champagne at a secret destination), fine art and VIP event access brought in some of the site's highest price tags. It’s true to say that each auction item seems to surpass the other, whether it is meeting Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, two tickets to the star-studded 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Afterparty, or a walk-on role in the upcoming Superman/Batman film starring Ben Affleck and Amy Adams. Charitybuzz cleverly uses pop culture to spread stories about its good-cause partners. Bidders support these not-for-profits simply by shopping for the unique experiences and luxuries they love. There’s never been a more delightful way to give.
