Our San Luis Potosi Complex in Mexico is the first GM plant in North America and the only vehicle manufacturing plant in the country to receive 50001 certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). We now have seven such certifications throughout our facilities in Europe, Asia and South America.

The certification acknowledges the latest and best international practices in energy management to help companies increase energy efficiency and performance all while reducing environmental impact and saving money.

To meet the certification’s strict standards, San Luis Potosi organized and documented the process of development, implementation and execution of best practices under an energy management system.

The plant began its history with ISO by earning ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.

ISO 9001 provides management tools to improve working practices throughout the facility.

ISO 14001 is an environmental management system focused on keeping those working practices at a high level while advancing environmental performance, cutting waste, and reducing costs.

This latest development demonstrates our continued progress toward meeting a companywide goal of reducing energy intensity from our manufacturing facilities 20 percent by 2020.

The facility joins the following ISO 50001 certified GM sites:

  • Aspern, Austria
  • Eisenach, Germany
  • Gliwice, Poland
  • Rayong, Thailand
  • Zaragoza, Spain
  • Rosario, Argentina

The assembly and transmission facilities at the San Luis Potosi complex also earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry for the last three years. They collectively reduced their energy intensity by 58 percent and avoided more than 11,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases.
