GSK Receives Healthiest Employer Award

Aileen, GSK Occupational Health Nurse

I always knew GSK was one of the healthiest employers, and to prove it, last week we received an award for just that: The Philadelphia Business Journal Healthiest Employer Award. We were one of the winners in the "extra-large company" category (5000+ employees).

As the Occupational Health Nurse for GSK, my job is all about helping employees to be healthy. GSK received the award because of the health benefits and resources we offer--and also because of our workplace itself.

Earlier this year, we moved our Philadelphia office to a brand new building at The Navy Yard, and the building was actually designed to be the healthiest--and most collaborative-workplace possible.

Throughout the day employees stop in to the Health Center with many questions about health and benefits resources: Where is the mammography van located today? Can you check my blood pressure? Where is the on-site gym? When will chair massages offered? Can I get a band-aid?

Today I had several inquiries about our new bike share program. I told employees how they can reserve a bike online, and then get some energizing exercise, fresh air and sunshine. We also have bike lockers and racks for employees who bike to work.

Our work stations are fully adjustable from sit to stand. The standing position gives my back a break from sitting, and the sitting position gives my tired feet an opportunity for rest. I am using the desk to create more balance in my day. Here's recent a story about our standing desks and walking work stations, where you can see the head of my department, Bob Carr, working while walking on the treadmill.

I'm glad to work for a company that looks out for the health and wellbeing of its employees--and proud that we're recognized for it!
