Campbell's announces a $10 million, 10 year plan to reduce childhood obesity and hunger in Camden's 23,000 youth

The remarks all spoke about the problems:

  • 1 supermarket services a city of 78,000 residents
  • Nearly 40% of Camden, NJ's 23,000 children are overweight or obese
  • 44% of Camden's population lives below the federal poverty level
  • 98% of Camden's children are eligible for the free school breakfast and lunch programs

But the atmosphere in the room was not one of melancholy, it was one of hope.

On Wednesday, February 16th, Campbell Soup Company announced an ambitious plan to reduce childhood obesity and hunger among Camden's 23,000 children by 50% in 10 years.  The plan includes a $10 million investment in local and national partners such as the Food Trust, the Y, the Food Bank of South Jersey and the Camden Children's Garden, just to name a few.

Too lofty of a goal?  I don't think so.  A problem as big as this breeds the need for big aspirations.  And, if we can make progress in Camden, we can make it anywhere.

The event included remarks by Campbell executives, Camden City Mayor Dana Redd, and a few of the partners in the initiative.  But, the true highlight, was the screams of delight of the youth from Forest Hill Elementary School, as they touched a star fruit for the first time, chopped ripe, fragrant melons and hit the button on a hot pink blender, putting the finishing touches on their V8 VFusion smoothies.  They were participating in a version of Cooking Matters, a nutrition education program from Share Our Strength, with chefs from Campbell's Culinary and Baking Institute.

Little did those children know that those smoothies were just the beginning...the beginning of a path to a brighter, healthier future.
