ABOUT Illinois Environmental Council
The Illinois Environmental Council Education Fund engages in education and outreach and provides a forum for environmentalists. The Illinois Environmental Council serves as the environmental communitys eyes, ears and voice in Springfield. The two organizations - collectively known as IEC - work together to ensure a more healthful environment for Illinois residents.
IEC promotes sound environmental laws and policies. We encourage decision makers in the private sector to go beyond minimum standards to establish new environmental best practices. We credit those who lead, innovate, and inspire others to follow their example.
Since its founding in 1975 by a group of dedicated grassroots environmentalists, IEC has sponsored issue advocacy campaigns and projects. This has allowed environmental organizations to pool their resources to create a higher profile for our issues in Springfield and Washington D.C. About 50 environmental and community organizations and 100 individuals from around the state are members of IEC today.
Illinois Environmental Council Showcases New JustMeans Website
The Illinois Environmental Council (IEC) has launched a new website, which is available at http://www.ilenviro.org. In addition to continuing to provide up to the minute information on environmental and energy policy issues under debate in Springfield, the upgraded IEC website now contains an education portal. This portal features public interest stories from around Illinois about efforts to reduce energy usage in commercial buildings and in everyday life. This site was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The new website also has a news distribution feature through JustMeans at www.justmeans.com. JustMeans hosts the largest on-line sustainability community in the United States. IEC will have the ability, through JustMeans' distribution, to contribute to the national dialogue on reducing energy usage in commercial buildings and in everyday life.
Each month, the IEC education portal will showcase a new YouTube story that will provide an interesting perspective on energy usage. This month, the IEC is featuring CNT Energy, a division of the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT), and its program for multi-tenant building owners in the Chicago area who want guidance on selecting and financing energy saving retrofit options. The website also highlights core aspects of IEC's mission: to inform and involve Illinois residents in important environmental policy issues before the Illinois state legislature. The site contains numerous blog posts from the 2011 legislative session which highlight pressing environmental issues in Illinois. IEC's Take Action center makes it easy for Illinois residents to voice their concerns to Illinois lawmakers. For more information, visitors to the site can join IEC's e-mail list, "like" IEC on Facebook, or follow IEC on Twitter.
