Abbott Works to Improve Sustainability across the Globe

Abbott has recently released its 2016 Global Sustainability Report, which highlights the company’s efforts to protect the planet while boosting efficiency and reducing costs. The report provides a deeper look into activities across the company to help people live healthier, better lives and to build stronger communities.

According to the report, Abbott is working to advance three environmental priorities, which include carbon emissions reduction, water conservation and waste reduction. Through 2016, Abbott reduced its GHG emissions by 28 percent and water use by 18 percent. The company also achieved waste reduction of 39 percent by the end of 2016.

The company’s environmental efforts are also delivering financial benefits, with anticipated 2017 savings of more than 12 percent compared to the company’s 2016 environmental expenses. Abbott’s commitment to innovation, protecting ideas and commercializing inventions earned it recognition as one of the Top 100 Global Innovators for the fourth consecutive year in 2016.

To address the global challenge of malnutrition, Abbott is focusing on rice, which is a staple food that feeds half the world. Working with the international nonprofit PATH, Abbott scientists reformulated PATH’s Ultra Rice, a fortified grain that looks and tastes like rice. The new formulations are already making a positive impact.

In 2016, Abbott Brazil sought to build fuller lives in Brazil in partnership with the Instituto Esporte & Educação, an organization that aims to contribute to culture and sports in the country. Abbott was one of 2016 sponsors of the organization’s Sports Caravan program, which promotes activities to engage children with sports, introducing the benefits of an active lifestyle and healthy living.

In 2016, the company’s sales team in India worked to make an impact on road safety locally, launching a nationwide road safety awareness campaign known as iCare. For one day, more than 6,000 members of its sales staff used their regular visits to medical clinics as an opportunity to speak with and educate patients in the waiting rooms about safe driving practices. To date, its salespeople and other staff members have reached nearly 500,000 people.
