Aeroplan's Beyond Miles Launches Campaign for Earth Day Canada's EcoKids Program

ecokids-2012-2013-calendarBy: Meirav Even-Har, Toronto

School is back and with it, a new Beyond Miles campaign. No better time to fundraise for environmental education while asking, "what inspires you to be green?" This interactive campaign is looking for submissions of a photo or drawing from Canadians that captures an environmental muse. The criterion is almost all encompassing: "It could be a photo of your favourite tree in your own backyard to a child's drawing of a whale," reads the Beyond Miles blog page.

The campaign supports the Beyond Miles partner, Earth Day Canada. Aeroplan will donate $5 to Earth Day Canada for each photo or drawing submission received that captures Canadians' inspiration for being green. Money is specifically being raised for EcoKids® class kits, which include "2013-2014 calendars with fun and informative eco-trivia and facts, bookmarks with eco-tips and rulers, and stickers." For every two submissions - or $10 - the cost of a kit is covered, and more kids throughout Canada can receive this learning tool. Seems like perfect timing, when many Canadians return to work and school after spending time outdoors at the cottage or camping - inspiration is likely to be found all around.

Beyond Miles and Earth Day Canada Partnership
As a Beyond Miles Founding Partners, Earth Day Canada is one of eight organizations that have a permanent online presence, allowing Aeroplan members to donate miles for a good cause. Founded in 1990, Earth Day Canada provides information and tools that Canadians need to support a healthier environment. While Earth Day is celebrated April 22nd each year around the globe, the organization offers year round programs. Donated miles help achieve funding that support programs and the online presence introduces Earth Day Canada to a diverse audience.

Earth Day Canada's EcoKids program "supports teachers and students, grades K-8, with free educational resources, curriculum-linked lesson plans including (ESL) and (FSL), and homework help and games for students."

A key ingredient in getting the public involved with one project, among many: making it easy and engaging. Photos or drawings are emailed and a selection posted on the Aeroplan Facebook fan page. (See details below.)

About Aeroplan's Beyond Miles Program
The Beyond Miles program is an interactive website that invites Aeroplan members to contribute and even initiate a charitable campaign or endeavour. The Beyond Miles core program enables Aeroplan members to donate miles in support of eight Canadian charitable organizations. Charitable Pooling enables local charities to run an annual Contribution Campaign with a mileage goal for a 30-day duration. To help reach the goal, Aeroplan will donate 10% if the charity attains 90% of its goal within its campaign period.

To show your support for the Earth Day Canada EcoKids campaign, please send your drawing or photo to: csr.aeroplan@aeroplan.com between August 29th and September 28th 2012*.
