Global Goals for Sustainable Development And BT’s Supporters Club: The Real Power Of Sport

(3BL Media/Justmeans) – On September 25 2015, 193 world leaders will commit to 17 Global Goals to achieve three extraordinary things in the next 15 years: end extreme poverty; fight inequality and injustice; and fix climate change. There is hope that these Global Goals for sustainable development could get these things done, in all countries for everyone. The Global Goals for Sustainable Development are a precious moment in our history. If the goals are going to work, everyone needs to know about them. We can’t fight for our rights if we don’t know what they are. We can’t convince world leaders to do what needs to be done if we don’t know what we are convincing them to do. If the goals are famous, they won’t be forgotten.

Helping to shout about these Global Goals and make a difference is the British telecommunications company, BT, which has developed inspirational projects using sport from across the world to launch The Supporters Club, part of its BT Sport channels. This initiative aims to build a better world by bringing people together through sport, where BT invests money raised by BT Sport customers in charitable projects handpicked with Comic Relief.

From the monthly donations of £1, £3 or £5 from BT Sport customers, The Supporters Club invests grants in sport-inspired community projects in the UK and overseas in partnership with Comic Relief. All in all, it aims to build a long-term sustainable grant-making fund that will support projects that use sport as an enabler for social change. So far, the money raised has helped to fund coaches, mentors and teachers who work with young people to help them overcome challenges and fulfil their potential.

Many of the Premier League Football and Rugby Clubs and the athletes BT works work with champion these causes, working with BT to help create compelling content for its TV Channels. These stories on the channels are used to help build the premium content for some of its biggest games, helping to deliver meaningful social impact and providing inspiring content for BT Sport and helping changing BT’s business, for the better.

We can be the first generation to end extreme poverty, the most determined generation in history to end injustice and inequality, and the last generation to be threatened by climate change! Over a quarter of the world’s population are under the age of 14 years old. It is their future these Goals are wanting to improve. By helping to engage the generation of young people whose choices and creativity matter through sport as they grow up over the next 15 years, BT is helping make the vision of these goals a reality...this could be the real power of sport.
