Green BuildingThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has included Office Depot in its list of Energy Star Leaders for having cut down its energy consumption and carbon emission levels by 27.5% across 1,123 sites. Office Depot becomes the first general retailer to earn this recognition for achieving more than 20 percent reduction in energy usage. The company is committed to the cause of environmental sustainability through its buildings and aims to reduce it energy costs at the same time. The recognition as an Energy Star Leader comes befittingly at a time when the company is celebrating its 25 years in the business.

Office Depot’s status as an Energy Star Leader comes as a result of the company’s visionary investments in the area of energy efficient and green construction methods, which include upgrading the existing energy management systems to conserve more energy, using advanced HVAC systems throughout its building portfolio, and revamping its lighting systems completely to adopt low energy lighting alternatives. Innovative solutions such as solar panels, skylights and installation of motion detectors for lighting have also been used at many of the company stores.

Office Depot has earned LEED Gold Certification for its headquarters in Boca Raton. In the last five years, the company has invested comprehensively in building and operating environment friendly stores and facilities. In 2010, the company announced its commitment to pursuing LEED certification for all its stores going forward. It is also pursuing LEED certification for its new warehousing facility in PA. For its consistent efforts and achievements in the field of environment, Office Depot was ranked No. 1 in the retail sector in Newsweek’s 2010 list of the greenest large corporations in the United States.

Energy Star Leaders are an exclusive group of large organizations that have demonstrated consistency in efficient energy management across their total building portfolio. The energy consumption of these buildings is tracked using the Environmental Protection Agency’s standard measurement tool. Office Depot’s achievement as an Energy Star Leader is a part of the company’s ambitious goal of lowering its carbon footprint in North America by 25 percent on a 2005 base before the end of 2012.
