Walgreens Supports Earth Hour, Saturday March 19

(3BL Media/Justmeans) - Over 1,000 Walgreens stores and offices will switch off all unnecessary lights to support Earth Hour, which takes place this Saturday, March 19, from 8:30 – 9:30 pm. Last year’s participation saved an amount of electricity equal to powering 30,000 homes for an hour.

“Walgreens is committed to reducing energy consumption,” says Monica Ferrer, senior manager of Energy and Utilities. “Earth Hour and other initiatives that lower carbon emissions impact our environment and ultimately help people across the world lead healthier and happier lives.”

Walgreens’ support of Earth Hour fits with its overall energy conservation strategy. The company plans to reduce its power usage by 20 percent across all of its stores and facilities by 2020.

Specific initiatives to achieve that goal include a Net Zero retail store, projected to produce energy equal to or greater than it consumes, due to 850 solar panels and two wind turbines that power the shop. Walgreens already uses LED store refrigeration lighting in its 5,000 store locations—lighting that uses 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs—and is installing 240 new energy systems throughout its retail and office locations. The company has also reduced its overall carbon footprint by 4,000 metric tons by optimizing transport routes.
