Overview

As the world's largest provider of casino entertainment, Harrah's Entertainment is aggressively and creatively addressing its environmental challenges and responsibilities. CodeGreen, Harrah's comprehensive environmental program, focuses on critical issues of energy, waste, water, and carbon emissions. Harrah's is committed to finding sustainable solutions for our products, equipment, and facilities.

Harrah's leadership in environmental stewardship is but one reflection of our historical industry leadership in innovation and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Environmental stewardship is in fact a key component of Harrah's Code of Commitment, the social responsibility standards that govern how we conduct business, and that guide our relationships with our customers, our employees, and our home communities. Other aspects of our CSR programs include: philanthropy, volunteerism, community relations, diversity & inclusion and responsible gaming. For additional information on these components, please visit, http://www.harrahs.com/harrahs-corporate/about-us.html

CodeGreen's foundation is the enthusiasm of our employees and the interest of our customers in Harrah's being good environmental stewards. CodeGreen teams at each Harrah's property work hard to reduce natural resource use, conserve energy, and promote reuse and recycling.

Several recent accomplishments demonstrate how sustainability is deeply woven into Harrah's business model and corporate ethics. In 2008, Harrah's became the first casino company to both join Climate Leaders, EPA's partnership with leading firms committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and win a regional EPA Environmental Quality Award. In 2008, Harrah's also partnered with NativeEnergy to reduce the World Series of Poker's carbon footprint.

But our commitment to sustainability is nothing new. Over the last five years, 74 energy conservation projects, including one of the world's cleanest co-generation units, have reduced Harrah's carbon emissions by the equivalent of 164,440 barrels of oil. Our conservation projects have been good for the environment, and smart for our business.

I have always enjoyed staying at Harrah's properties. I am glad this company is dedicated to social responsibility, too. Nowadays, excellent customer service and a global reach is crucial for any world-class business to survive and prosper. This is especially so in the hospitality industry. One thing I noticed, however, is the lack of diversity in the very top executive level (especially of Asian Americans) when there are very many well-educated, successful, proactive executive-trained Asian American candidates in the workplace. This is especially disconcerting in the hospitality/gaming and travel industry where over 60 to 70 percent of the clientele and lower ranked (service level - servers, dealers, cleaners) are from Asian or is of Asian descent. This is also true of Hilton Hotels, Omni Hotels, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Hotels. Harrahs is a great company, but need to diversify in its top ranks to better understand their clientele and lower-ranked mass employees' culture.
