The Changing Role Of Women
On November 26th we are holding a meeting in the House of Commons on the The Changing Role of Women In the 21st Century. This will be hosted by Theresa Villiers MP. In December 2005, after she had served just 7 months in parliament, David Cameron appointed Theresa to his Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. As well as working alongside George Osborne on developing Conservative economic policy, Theresa led the Opposition scrutiny of the Finance Bills in 2006 and 2007. She is now the Shadow minister For Transport. Before being elected as an MP in the last general Election Theresa was a member of The European Parliament. She is one of the leading front bench team on the Opposition and is champion of women in the House of Commons. Also speaking will be Janette Faherty Chief Executive of Avanta. Janette is the CEO of Avanta, and one of the UK's leading private sector employment-focused training and enterprise companies. Janette started doing voluntary work among women?s groups in Haringey, North London. She became a Training manager and then Agency Manager of a public not for profit company and is now a businesswoman running a growing enterprise that employs 650 people and has a turnover of £45 million a year. There are, at the last count, 2.6 million people on incapacity benefit. No one believes that all of these are genuinely incapable of entering the work-place. Janette believes that a million of them genuinely want to go back to work but are held back by lack of skills, by real but surmountable disabilities or by psychological factors such as depression. She is convinced that they can. ?It?s going to happen. It?s definitely going to happen.? Celia Hodson, Deputy Chief Executive Social Enterprise Coalition As the Deputy Chief Executive and part of the Management Team at the Social Enterprise Coalition, Celia is responsible for the operations, sustainability and diversity of SEC, instigating an annual events programme and a range of member benefits. Celia brings a wealth of experience from the business community and high end retailing sector, providing a turning point of organisational change. Previous to that Celia was the Chief Executive Officer for a Co-operative Development Agency. She had responsibility for providing leadership, direction, business planning and policy development. This meeting is kindly being sponsored by Avanta

Social Media Revolution
Social networks can change the world but will it be for good or will it be otherwise? The Social media revolution is all about the way that web technology has allowed us to be increasingly interactive online. For businesses and established media organisations this creates new business opportunities. However for citizens it can create platforms where people can link up with others for debate and social action. This is a global phenomena and one that will impact on our political and social life profoundly. Howe can this social media revolution be harnessed to effect change in the 21st century when the issues facing us are critical. This is what we plan to discuss at our January meeting. Leading this discussion will be, Kevin Long who is setting up the London Office of JustMeans - a platform where thousands of individuals and companies and social action networks trade knowledge, and through it hope to exponentially lower the transaction cost of doing business in the world of social responsibility Martin Murphy is the co-founder of Network2012 is a new social enterprise that is becoming a resource for connecting and networking with other social enterprises, charities voluntary groups. It is just beginning and Martin will be able to speak about the problems and opportunities in building a social network. Other Speakers - We also hope to have two other speakers - one from the growing social action networks and a transatlantic videoconference with one of the founders of the Gaia social action network. 21st Century Network was set up and is part of the social media revolution but it combines web contact with real meetings and social action groups. It is one of the many movements creating a new form of politics in the 21st century and challenges the status quo. Join us here to discuss the social media revolution and how we can be a part of it to create now hope that change can happen and that through new forms of communication we can all make a difference

Social Change Through Art & Entertainment
On January 14th we are holding a meeting to discuss the importance of art and entertainment to social change. Art, and its expression through entertainment, is an important way to change how people think about their world. American comic George Carlin said that laughter was a 'moment of Zen' - a moment when the human mind can receive ideas that can change the way it sees the world. It is perhaps only creative activity that can really appeal to the senses or emotions of a human individual - whether it is music, theatre, literature, the visual arts or even street performances that you happen to come across. We will be inviting artists and entertainers who are already using their medium in this way to speak at this event. More information on who will be speaking will be added as it becomes available.
Event Date 12 Feb 2009

Social Action Groups
This meeting will be about our Social Action Groups. Coordinators of each group will tell us what is happening in their group and what their plans are. We will then break up into how many social action groups we have by then so members can find out what is happening and decide if they wish to take part. This is a chance to get the social action groups off the ground and to plan for the future. It is also a chance to see what other groups people are interested in and see how we can start them up..
