LOUIS,June 19, 2013 /3BL Media/ - At the 2013 World Food Prize Announcement Ceremony held today at the U.S. State Department, Monsanto's Chief Technology Officer, Robert T. Fraley, Ph.D., was named a 2013 World Food Prize Laureate. Fraley's recognition is for the research he and his teams pioneered in plant biotechnology and its application to advanced breeding and crop improvement techniques in agriculture.Fraley will share the prestigious prize with Marc Van Montagu, Ph.D., and Mary-Dell Chilton, Ph.D."During the last 60 years, the science of molecular genetics, also referred to as New Genetics, has opened up uncommon opportunities for shaping the future of agriculture, industry, medicine and environment protection," said Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, renowned Indian scientist and Chairman of the World Food Prize Laureate Selection Committee. "It is therefore appropriate that the World Food Prize is being awarded this year to some of the pioneers of the New Genetics who have opened up opportunities for achieving a balance between human numbers and the human capacity to produce adequate food."The World Food Prize was created in 1987 by the late Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Norman Borlaug, and is the foremost international award recognizing individuals who have contributed landmark achievements in increasing the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world."On behalf of my grandfather, I would like to congratulate Robb Fraley on being named one of this year's World Food Prize Laureates," said Julie Borlaug, granddaughter of the late Dr. Borlaug and associate director for external relations at the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture. "My grandfather was a strong supporter of the need for innovation to help in the fight against hunger and in the belief that smallholder farmers around the world deserve every opportunity to have access to these critically important technologies. Robb has been a tireless champion of these efforts, dedicating his career to addressing food security through scientific advancements in agriculture."Born in a small farming community in central Illinois, Fraley earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Illinois and conducted his post doctoral work at the University of California, San Francisco. He joined Monsanto in 1981 as a senior research associate and in 1983 he and his team announced the creation of the first genetically engineered plants. Since that time, millions of farmers globally have benefitted from this pioneering research in biotechnology and continued focus on the development of advanced breeding technologies."I am deeply humbled by this extraordinary honor in receiving the World Food Prize and joining the ranks of so many accomplished Laureates who have come before me," Fraley said. "It's an award I share with the team at Monsanto. I really believe we have just scratched the surface on what is possible in bringing innovation to farmers who deliver food security to consumers around the world. The World Food Prize provides us an important platform to engage in a new global dialogue around enabling farmer access to advanced agriculture tools while ensuring a sustainable food supply for all."Fraley will be awarded the World Food Prize at a ceremony this fall, which will be in conjunction with The Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa, October 16-18.ResourcesOfficial biographies, photos and additional information are available at www.worldfoodprize.org/2013laureates and www.monsanto.com. LOUIS,June 19, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Monsanto Company today released its 2012 Sustainability Report. The report focuses both on how the company operates its business and how it is working with partners to help with the challenge of feeding 9 billion people expected to inhabit Earth by 2050."Every day we are met with the challenges of a growing planet. We will need to produce more food while using natural resources even more efficiently. "This report details our commitment to sustainability, includes a balanced view of our progress to date and examines the challenges we face along our company's sustainability journey."June 2013 marks the five-year anniversary of when Monsanto made its commitment to sustainable agriculture - pledging to help farmers double yields in our core crops (corn, soy, canola and cotton) by 2030 while committing to produce each ton with one-third fewer resources (land, water and energy). Additionally, the company committed to a goal to help farmers improve their quality of life, including 5 million people in resource-poor farm families by 2020."While we've made progress towards some of our goals surrounding our commitment to sustainable agriculture, we still have much more to achieve," said Steiner. "We stand committed to continue to do our part and work together with farmers and partners to continuous improvement in advancing sustainable agriculture."There are four chapters in the Monsanto 2012 Sustainability Report: (1) Our Commitments, (2) Food and Nutrition, (3) Environment and (4) Communities. (GMCR), and Lake Region State College in North Dakota will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of a 1.6 MW wind turbine. Through the purchase of NativeEnergy's Help Build(tm) offsets, GMCR provided critical upfront funding to enable the project to be developed. The turbine will provide LRSC with energy and a teaching tool for students."With the Lake Region State College Turbine, NativeEnergy and its business partners have helped bring more than 10 community wind projects online," said Jeff Bernicke, the company president. "It has been enormously gratifying for us to have the opportunity to work with business leaders and valuable community resources, like the College, to promote clean energy and tackle climate change."LRSC has had a focus on wind energy since their Wind Energy Technician program began in 2009. Students have a choice of a one or two-year program, which trains them to enter the field as operational technicians. In 2011, the program received the Seal of Approval from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Only seven other schools in the country have received this honor."This project was the missing piece to our wind energy program. We needed the turbine to turn a good program into a great one," explained LRSC President Douglas Darling. "Students feel we have a whole new program now - one where they can learn theory and then enter the work environment of a commercial grade turbine and reinforce classroom learning with hands-on experience."North Dakota has the sixth largest wind resource in the country, yet ranks ninth in wind energy development, producing a small fraction of its full potential. The Wind Energy Technician program provides the state with young, trained professionals to help advance North Dakota's wind energy sector. The turbine is projected to reduce more than 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions during the project's 10-year lifetime. GMCR will use those reductions to mitigate its corporate greenhouse gas footprint."Sustainability has been an essential part of GMCR since it was founded more than 30 years ago," said T. J. Whalen, GMCR's Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer. "This is a great way for us to reduce our environmental footprint, and at the same time help raise awareness for sustainable energy solutions."Previously, GMCR and NativeEnergy have worked together to help fund the Greensburg Wind Farm, the Alex Little Soldier Wind Turbine, and the Wewoka Biogas Project.About Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. Through incentives, education and campaign outreach, Recyclebank is able to amplify the consciousness of a community's residents around the importance of recycling and the environment," Eisendrath continued. "By educating and empowering more than 4 million members online and offline, Recyclebank aims to increase recycling rates and encourage members to make more sustainable choices like reducing energy and water consumption, taking smarter transportation and other environmentally-friendly actions."In a recent survey, Recyclebank found that 82 percent of members report the company is influential in motivating them to recycle more.
Philadelphia, PA, June 19, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Recent studies linking bullying and depression, coupled with extensive media coverage of bullying-related suicide among young people, led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assemble an expert panel to focus on these issues. This panel synthesized the latest research about the complex relationship between youth involvement in bullying and suicide-related behaviors. Three themes emerged: 1) Bullying among youth is a significant public health problem, with widespread and often harmful results; 2) There is a strong association between bullying and suicide-related behaviors; and 3) Public health strategies can be applied to prevent bullying and suicide.A special supplement of the Journal of Adolescent Health presents the panel's findings, introduced by an insightful editorial by Marci Feldman Hertz, MS, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia, and Ingrid Donato and James Wright, MS, LCPC, Center for Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Rockville, Maryland.Between 20 and 56 percent of young people are involved in bullying annually, as either a victim or perpetrator, or both. While bullying situations vary by type, age, and duration, middle school-aged children are more likely to be involved in bullying than those in high school. Verbal bullying occurs more frequently than physical or cyber-bullying and is more likely to happen over a longer time period. Further, lesbian and gay youth are more likely to be victimized than heterosexuals.Poor mental and physical health among the victims and perpetrators of bullying, and those who experience both victimization and perpetration, investigators say, contribute to the problem. Further, involvement in bullying can have long-lasting, harmful effects, such as depression, anxiety, abdominal pain, and tension, months or even years later, as reported by two studies in this special supplement.Researchers demonstrate a strong link between involvement in bullying and suicide. Dorothy Espelage and Melissa K. Holt, authors of "Suicidal Ideation and School Bullying Experiences After Controlling for Depression and Delinquency," show that the idea of suicide and attempts at suicide among middle school students were three-to-five times greater than among uninvolved students.By applying public health strategies, researchers assert that bullying can be prevented, improving health and mental outcomes for many youth. Articles such as "Suicidal Thinking and Behavior Among Youth Involved in Verbal and Social Bullying: Risk and Protective Factors," by Iris Wagman Borowsky, Lindsay A. Taliaferro, and Barbara J. McMorris, reinforce the call for an integrated approach of multiple strategies to prevent suicide by focusing on shared risk and protective factors, including individual coping skills, family and school social support, and supportive school environments.Notes the supplement's guest editor, Marci Feldman Hertz, "Given the prevalence and impact of bullying, it is important to move forward while public health strategies are still being developed. We can begin by implementing and evaluating strategies that have demonstrated effectiveness at increasing protective factors and decreasing risk factors associated with both bullying and suicide." Education and health stakeholders, she adds, should consider broadening their focus beyond just providing services to those already involved in bullying or suicide-related behaviors. They should also implement strategies to prevent bullying and suicide behavior from occurring in the first place.# # #Notes for EditorsThe Relationship Between Youth Involvement in Bullying and SuicideGuest Editor: Marci F. Based on a strategic process co-developed by former colleagues and co-authors Nina Goodrich, now GreenBlue's Executive Director, and Richard Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Value Innovations, Inc., a GreenBlue Advisory Services team will help companies walk through a ten-step course of action that strategically links sustainability with innovation."Innovation and sustainability must be linked and deeply embedded in corporate culture and reflected in long-term strategy as drivers of future growth," noted Goodrich, pointing to a recent study by Michael Barnett of Rutgers University and Robert Salomon of New York University that found that only companies that make a serious and long-term commitment to sustainability reap the economic benefits of their environmental and social endeavors. Superficial sustainability initiatives, the study showed, can actually increase cost, leave stakeholders unmoved, and impair financial performance. GreenBlue's sustainability-focused adaptation of the value innovation methodology starts by helping companies identify who their most important sustainability customer group is. It continues with a series of contextual interviews with a representative sampling of the most important customer group and leads to an iterative plotting and validation of "as-is" and "to-be" value curves. These value curves serve as a roadmap to sustainability strategies and solutions."Our value innovation for sustainability process is a learn-by-doing engagement, designed to tie innovation and sustainability to the DNA of a company," said Katherine O'Dea, Senior Director of Innovation and Advisory Services at GreenBlue. "While we work with our clients on an immediate sustainability issue or need, we also train an internal team to be able to repeat and reapply the process to future sustainability challenges and opportunities until it becomes standard operating procedure." The process is applicable for large, mid-size or small companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. It can be applied at the strategy, product, process, or service level. "Because a key step in the value innovation process is contextual interviewing, the process also tends to generate stakeholder trust, which generally translates into maximum return on sustainability investments," added O'Dea.To bring Value Innovation for Sustainability to your group, contact O'Dea at katherine.odea@greenblue.org or 434 817 1424 x329.About GreenBlue Advisory ServicesGreenBlue is a nonprofit that equips business with the science and resources to make products more sustainable. In front of approximately 450 attendees, including international students, academic advisors and key agricultural leaders attending the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association (IFAMA) Conference, Grant announced the additional commitment to this important program, focused on training the next generation of global rice and wheat plant breeders. To date, the MBBISP program has supported 52 students from 21 different countries. With today's additional commitment announcement of $3 million, Monsanto's total program investment equals $13 million and will fund the program through 2016."Farmers need the best innovations if they are to help feed, clothe and power our growing world in a sustainable way," said Grant. "Innovations come from the best and brightest minds around the world and agriculture is a business where innovations are not only needed, but essential for the future. Talented young men and women can find a home in agriculture to put their energy, ideas and passion to work to make a significant, positive impact on their world and real people."Started in 2009, MBBISP is named in honor and celebration of the accomplishments of Hank Beachell, Ph.D., and Norman Borlaug, Ph.D., two preeminent plant breeders in rice and wheat, respectively, whose research has been instrumental in reducing hunger for billions of people relying on rice and wheat for their daily nutrition."My grandfather was passionate about science and the opportunity of advancing agriculture to help improve the human condition," said Julie Borlaug, granddaughter of the late Dr. Borlaug. "Programs in education and training for young scientists are an investment in our collective future, and I believe my grandfather would be inspired and energized by the tremendous research being accomplished in this global scholars program that bears his name."Rice and wheat are among the most widely consumed cereal grains in the world and represent the major source of calories in many parts of the developing world. Further production improvements in these crops will be essential to help meet the food needs of the anticipated global population of 9 billion people by 2050.Over the next three years, the program, which is administered by Texas AgriLife Research, an agency of the Texas A&M University System, will continue to help identify outstanding young scientists and support them with Ph.D. training in advanced plant breeding techniques, at least one season of field experience in a developing country, and leadership development. Current MBBISP scholars are focusing their research on critical constraints affecting rice or wheat production at universities with doctorate programs in rice or wheat breeding.Students are selected by a panel of preeminent judges representing some of the most accomplished scientific leaders in rice and wheat breeding.About Monsanto's Beachell-Borlaug International Scholars ProgramMonsanto established MBBISP in 2009 in honor of Hank Beachell, Ph.D., and Norman Borlaug, Ph.D., two preeminent plant breeders in rice and wheat respectively. Their lifelong work laid the foundation for the tremendous increases in rice and wheat production that continue to help feed the world today. The goal of MBBISP is to: (1) aid in the development of highly educated rice and wheat breeders who can serve as future leaders in the field of agriculture and (2) provide opportunities for young scientists to experience the important work and mission of public sector research institutions, particularly in developing countries. To date, Monsanto has committed $13 million to MBBISP and the program has supported 52 students from 21 different countries. More information on MBBISP is available at www.monsanto.com/mbbischolars.About Monsanto CompanyMonsanto Company is a leading global provider of technology-based solutions and agricultural products that improve farm productivity and food quality. Students at nearly 350 schools were challenged to design a t-shirt, a poster and host a rally in the spring to encourage more teens to have a conversation with their peers about staying safe on the road.Cookeville High School was selected as the grand prize winning school and will be awarded $10,000 to continue supporting safe driving programs at their school. Participating schools were judged on several criteria, including involvement of student body, strength of teen safe driving messages, creativity of activities and community and school administration involvement.Cookeville High School will receive the top prize because the school's SADD and TEST chapter-led rallies created a high level of involvement from the entire student body and even teens from neighboring schools. Their student-led rally gained the attention of country music star Tim McGraw, who invited select Cookeville High School students to attend the premiere of his new music video focused on the dangers of distracted driving. The school also produced a winning poster design as one of the steps in the Act Out Loud contest."Learning to drive is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences a teen goes through, but it comes with tremendous responsibility," said Keri Hunt, Allstate agency owner in Cookeville, who supported the students' rally. "The students from Cookeville High School went above and beyond to educate their classmates and friends about the importance of earning the keys to the car."Five additional winners from the Act Out Loud contest were also selected to receive monetary prizes for their rallies.Runner Up Winners:Dubiski Career High School, Business Professionals of America (Grand Prairie, Texas)Franklin Community High School, Business Professionals of America (Franklin, Ind.)Seekonk High School (Boston, Mass.)Argonaut High School, Friday Night Live (Jackson, Calif.)Gillespie High School, Miners Preparing And Caring for Teen Driving (Gillespie, Ill.)Act Out Loud supports Global Youth Traffic Safety Month in May. The technology includes cloud-based platforms, mobile health applications and provider Web portals. The report also frames the need to develop deeper, technology-driven innovation that incorporates parents and families as key participants in the care of a chronically ill child. According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 32 million children suffer from chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes. The white paper was written by Dr. Richard Antonelli, medical director of integrated care at Boston Children's Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Andrey Ostrovsky, pediatric resident in the Boston Combined Residency Program. It is available online at http://responsibility.verizon.com/healthcare.The report's findings are based in large part on a Verizon Foundation event last December that brought together leaders representing families, nonprofit organizations, quality-improvement experts, policymakers, technology leaders, practicing physicians and health delivery system designers. "Healthcare delivery has barely begun to apply communications technology - but the time is now and the means are at hand," said Antonelli. "The beneficiaries of this innovative work will be children and adolescents with chronic conditions, as well as their families and caregivers. These innovations are broadly applicable and all people, regardless of age, will benefit."Given that children and adolescents are 'digital natives,' I am optimistic about the likelihood of adoption of these communications, care coordination and self-management enhancement technologies," Antonelli said.Technology Critical for Chronic Disease Care, ManagementThe white paper is organized along the four domains of the ground-breaking Care Coordination Framework, a model for integrating and improving healthcare delivery for pediatric patients with complex care needs and other vulnerable populations, developed by Antonelli and colleagues. Key takeaways of the White Paper include the need for digitally-driven solutions not currently available in the marketplace in the following areas: Care coordination - Cloud-based platforms, which would allow all members of the care team - healthcare providers, patients and their families - to share information in a more organized and dependable manner. Care management - The secure, instantaneous transmission of biometric and lab-specific data to inform clinical decision-making and the appropriate allocation of care would benefit patients and providers, and improve the quality of treatment for chronic diseases. Education - Web-based portals would enable the entire care team to remain aware of available resources to assist with care coordination, as well as improve compliance with and adherence to treatment programs. Policy Environment - Proper incentives for technology adoption can drive a shift to a team-based care approach that focuses on the family and patient, rather than the traditional physician-centric model. Findings Consistent with Goals of Verizon's Powerful Answers AwardThe white paper's research aligns with Verizon's ongoing Powerful Answers Award, which will present $10 million through a series of cash prizes of up to $1 million to innovators and companies whose proposals utilize Verizon's network, device and platform technologies to deliver social benefits and spur growth in the areas of healthcare, education and sustainability. Initial general concept proposals are due by June 30, and can be submitted at www.powerfulanswersaward.com. Finalists will be selected in following months, and winners will be announced at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Rose Stuckey Kirk, president of the Verizon Foundation, said: "Chronic diseases are a critical concern in the U.S., particularly among underserved children who are disproportionately affected by these conditions. Our evolving relationship with Boston Children's Hospital seeks to find common ground among patients' families, advocates of care delivery system redesign and healthcare professionals to improve the ability of families to access and take advantage of the daily care and disease management that is crucial to positive health outcomes."Verizon will continue to work with the entire healthcare ecosystem to develop and deliver solutions that can improve pediatric treatment and care, making it more accessible to the families who need it most. I encourage problem solvers to submit a proposal and enter the Verizon Powerful Answers Award for the chance to get funding to develop a solution."Note: The Verizon Foundation provided financial support to produce the white paper. The Verizon Powerful Answers Award is operated by Verizon; Boston Children's Hospital and Dr. Antonelli have no involvement in its operations, or selection of awardees. Boston Children's HospitalBoston Children's Hospital is home to the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric medical center, where its discoveries have benefited both children and adults since 1869. More than 1,100 scientists, including seven members of the National Academy of Sciences, 13 members of the Institute of Medicine and 14 members of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute comprise Boston Children's research community. Founded as a 20-bed hospital for children, Boston Children's today is a 395 bed comprehensive center for pediatric and adolescent health care grounded in the values of excellence in patient care and sensitivity to the complex needs and diversity of children and families. In addition, Mars has signed BICEP's Climate Declaration, which calls upon federal policymakers to seize the American economic opportunity of addressing climate change and has been endorsed by General Motors Co., Intel and others.Based in McLean, Virginia, Mars has net sales of more than $33 billion and is one of the world's leading manufacturers of petcare products, chocolate, gum, confections, food, coffees and teas, spanning iconic global brands that include M&M'S, Snickers, Pedigree, Whiskas, Royal Canin, Orbit, Extra, Uncle Ben's and many more. The food industry leader joins BICEP at a critical moment, as United States agriculture faces mounting threats from climate change and extreme weather. Ongoing drought has tripled federal crop insurance losses over the past three years, to $16 billion in payouts in 2012. By joining BICEP, Mars will advocate not only for policies that shore up domestic agricultural supply chains, but also those that will enable cleaner, more efficient energy use and generate solutions for the threats of climate change."Mars is committed to reducing and eventually eliminating our greenhouse gas emissions, in absolute terms, because this is the right thing to do. Climate change has implications for the production of agricultural ingredients from corn to cocoa, and addressing it requires changes to the way we source materials and manufacture our products," said Brad Figel, vice president of public affairs, Mars North America. "Therefore it is imperative we continue to improve sustainability in our approach to business, as well as the way we create policy, which is why it is important for us to make our voice heard through BICEP in encouraging policymakers to take action now."BICEP, a project of Ceres, was launched in 2008 with a core group of five companies, including Starbucks, Nike and Levi Strauss. & Co. With the addition of Mars, Inc., BICEP has since expanded to include twenty-four leading companies representing the personal products, sports and real estate sectors such as Seventh Generation, the North Face and KB Home. BICEP members have been vocal proponents of renewable energy, greener transportation and stricter pollution controls on power plants."Mars is an American icon of industry that understands the critical importance of its environmental commitments. We are proud to welcome Mars as the newest member of BICEP and encourage the company to share its policy convictions with Washington, where they will make an even greater impact," saidMindy Lubber, president of Ceres, which directs BICEP. "Mars is a powerful voice in the climate debate and we hope policymakers will take note when business leaders speak out with a sense of urgency on climate change."A full list of BICEP members is available at www.ceres.org/bicep.About CeresCeresis an advocate for sustainability leadership. The research is the first published work of the CSP and draws lessons from three yearlong pilot projects with AT&T, Best Buy, and Dell, as well as from Hilton Worldwide's work integrating sustainability criteria for product procurement into its proprietary LightStay(tm) performance-management system."Procurement directors are ber-consumers--charged with buying thousands of the same product types for their companies--and they must weigh many factors in these decisions, from price to quality to delivery timing," saidEric Olson, Senior Vice President, Advisory Services, BSR. "While sustainability should be a critical factor, there is a dearth of information on how to integrate it into these decisions."The CSP's research and analysis included interviews with seven global companies that are currently leading on responsible supply chain efforts, three multistakeholder efforts focused on product-level sustainability, and extensive desk-based research on the current landscape of sustainable procurement initiatives. In the first year, experts from the CSP analyzed three products with BSR member companies to examine how product sustainability information could be included in procurement decisions:AT&T's fan belts for building mechanical equipment: This basic product contributes to the company's annual energy output, but to upgrade the fan belts to achieve cost and energy savings, the project leaders needed to understand and communicate the return on investment.Best Buy's in-store display units: This moderately complex category comprises several substitutable commodities (such as wood/wood products, metals, plastics, and more) but requires strategic supplier engagement to identify sustainable alternatives that meet Best Buy's needs. Changes in displays could reduce costs for the company if display units are redesigned for reuse.Dell's notebook computers: This complex product requires management of long-term strategic relationships with a small number of key suppliers (the original design manufacturers or ODMs) in order to reduce the embedded energy use over the lifecycle of the device.Commenting on the report, William Kornegay, Senior Vice President, Supply Management, Hilton Worldwide said, "Procurement managers have long struggled to access the resources or the guidance they need to make strategic and sustainable purchasing decisions. The CSP addresses that gap and aims to equip those managers with the tools they need to purchase more sustainable products. We believe that by analyzing and sharing insights and best practices, we can catalyze global sustainability solutions across industries and around the world."The report outlines four key lessons from these case studies, as well as from Hilton Worldwide's procurement analysis:Align the strategy with the nature of the category and supplier relationships: For simple products, the preferred business and sustainability specifications can be written by the company and then sent to suppliers for a competitive bid. But as products increase in complexity, companies must work strategically with suppliers to enhance the product's sustainability characteristics over time.Involve the right players: Include the broad range of internal stakeholders that influence the design, specification, and use of purchased products and services.Establish a clear business case: Given the range of attributes procurement directors have for purchasing decisions, it's important to emphasize how sustainability attributes support those needs--for instance, through reduced costs or savings over the life of the product.Start with what is measurable: Achieving the ultimate goal of lifecycle sustainability will take significant time and effort, making it important for companies to start simple and build momentum through early wins."The Center for Sustainable Procurement will be building on these early results and insights by continuing to work with individual companies on embedding sustainability into procurement decisions, and using this evolving body of work to create tools and guidance that others can learn from and adapt for their own use," said Olson. "We are actively looking for ways to engage a wider audience of companies, both individually and via trade associations, on these challenges."For more information about the Center for Sustainable Procurement, visitwww.bsr.org/en/our-work/working-groups/center-for-sustainable-procurement. We laugh together, cry together and occasionally disagree. If you have a sister you know what I'm talking about. Over the weekend my two sisters and I ended up watching a special on "Women in the World" together. It was a great show to watch with my 28 year-old and 11 year-old sisters on our girl's night.During this special there was a focus on the issue of domestic violence and its evolution from the 70s until now. As we watched my sisters and I had a hard time picturing a world where reported instances of domestic violence were not taken seriously, especially when today there are public figures, companies and government legislation that publicly take a stand to prevent domestic violence. We were surprised that one in three women will experience physical or emotional abuse in their lifetime. I never thought my family could become part of a statistic, but there we were. Three young women, sisters, who could possibly one day experience domestic violence. This show made me think about the great work Mary Kay does to prevent and end domestic violence, especially the latest results from theMary Kay Truth About Abuse survey. Polling more than 800 domestic violence shelters nationwide, this survey revealed that most women seeking assistance from abuse are between the ages 18-32--an age range my older sister and I fall into. It's frightening to know that the cycle of abuse is on the rise while those seeking help from abuse are getting younger. The good news is there's hope. There are programs committed to preventing and ending this epidemic. Mary Kay has partnered with Love is Respect for the nation's first text for help program geared towards providing information on healthy dating relationships. Let's share this information with as many people as we can to keep another sister, mother or daughter from becoming "one in three."Todays blog post is from Virginia Hock. The presentation will be made at the organization's Winning Spirit Awards, concluding with the prestigious distinction honoring the entire Southwest team who assisted with the November 2012 Hurricane Sandy rescue of 47 orphan pets. The story made national news as stranded orphaned dogs and cats (from Save A Pet on Long Island and from New Jersey shelters rescued by Delaware County SPCA) were flown across the country to Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe on November 17th. The East Coast shelter pets had been waiting for forever homes when the storm hit and left their facilities uninhabitable. With remaining East Coast shelters reaching full-capacity and unable to provide resources for all of the homeless pets in need, Helen Woodward Animal Center hoped to take them in but lacked the resources to transport the orphan pets to the West Coast. The missing link arrived in an impressive 48-hour turn-around with a chartered plane coordinated by Center friend, John Reilly, President of Sea World San Diego, and donated by the generous leadership at Southwest Airlines. BP who provides Southwest's fuel donated nearly 5,000 gallons of fuel to the life-saving flight, as well. The Southwest aircraft was staffed with an animal-loving crew of pilots and flight attendants, each of whom donated their time and hearts to the homeless dogs and cats.Linda Rutherford, Southwest Airlines Vice President of Communication and Strategic Outreach credited the entire team with the emotional rescue. "Helping these animals find their forever homes and making room for the many animals displaced by the Hurricane is something we were happy to do, but wouldn't have been possible without the generous spirit of our Employees and partners."Since that time, a unique bond has developed between both organizations. Local Southwest Employees have remained devoted to the cause of finding homes for orphan pets, donating manpower and countless hours to multiple Helen Woodward Animal Center fundraisers such as the Puppy Love 5K Run/Walk and the annual Spring Fling Gala. Now on a first-name basis with many of the Southwest team volunteers, Center staff has been moved and impressed by their consistent dedication. The Humane Award is presented annually by Helen Woodward Animal Center President, Mike Arms, to a person or entity that has made a significant positive impact on the animal welfare world - devoting their time, energy, and resources to improving the quality of life for orphaned animals. Past recipients include Kristen Bell, Diane Keaton, Betty White, Tippi Hedren, and Linda Blair. This year's presentation is a very personal one for those who were there to see the homeless pets carried off the aircraft in the arms of Southwest Employees and ultimately delivered into the arms of forever families."We are honored to be included in this employee recognition event," stated Center Vice President of Development Renee Resko. "It's an incredible group of people and we feel privileged to honor the individuals who made this rescue possible."For more information on Helen Woodward Animal Center or the Hurricane Sandy rescues, please contact PR Manager Jessica Gercke at(858) 756-4117 x 335or log on towww.animalcenter.org.
The North Atlantic fin whale is the largest mammal in the world after the blue whale and considered to be verging on extinction. Environmental campaigners recently revealed that the meat from such endangered whales caught off Iceland by the company, Hvalur hf - "Whale Ltd" - was being sold in Japan as upmarket dog treats. Michinoku Farm, a company based in Tokyo, was producing chews made from North Atlantic fin whales, marketing them as "low calorie, low fat, high protein" and suitable for dogs that are allergic to other meats.Clare Perry, a senior campaigner for the pressure group, the Environmental Investigation Agency, said that the use of this meat was "grotesque" and that internet retailers ought to take greater responsibility for the sustainability of the products they purvey. Google and Amazon have both prohibited the sale of whale products in Japan.Nanami Kurasawa, the head of the citizens' action group, Iruka & Kujira Action Network, said that the attraction of such treats was that it provided affluent Japanese with "something different." Kurusawa concluded, "I, for one, think this is a disgrace." Japanese dogs are pampered, and toy dogs are often transported in prams. Michinoku also makes products from pig's oesophagus, kangaroo hearts and Mongolian horse lungs, spine and cartilage. The move to pet food was the result of decreased interest from human diners since the 1960s. Susan Millward, the executive director of the US-based Animal Welfare Institute, said that using the meat of an endangered species of whale was "a desperate attempt to keep a cruel and unnecessary industry alive at any cost."Michinoku withdrew the product from sales hours after uproar ensued, although it's legal in Japan. The company's president, Takuma Konno, pleaded, "Dogs are like family members for many people in Japan. We just wanted to sell a wide variety of food for dogs." He added that while campaigners consider whales to be important, some people saw dogs as equally important, although he accepted that it wasn't worth selling the product in question if people grew angry as a result and he admitted that he was perhaps ignorant of the debate over whaling. His company claims to be green because it uses geothermal energy to melt the fat of whale carcasses - evidently, the company holds that causing the deaths of animals belonging to an endangered species is no barrier to greenery. There's an international ban on whaling, but Japan claims that it's carrying out research while Iceland ignores the ban entirely. In Japan, the campaign against whaling is viewed as cultural imperialism and consumption of whale meat as a cultural tradition, with the Fisheries Minister, Yoshimasa Hayashi, saying criticism of whaling was "a kind of prejudice against Japanese culture." 180 fin whales will be hunted by Iceland in 2013.Michinoku Farm said that the meat of these whales which hover on the brink of extinction had a "crispy texture." Read Full Blog

The partnership is part of a national workforce development initiative by Capital One focused on helping to match job seekers--including returning veterans--with higher quality jobs and to train and retrain workers to compete for jobs based on local community demand. This announcement was made in tandem with the recent Capital One Bank, Easter Seals and Corporate Immersion-sponsored "How Hiring Our Nation's Veterans Can Impact Your Bottom Line" Flag Day workshop on Friday, June 14, where approximately 35-40 small businesses from the Washington metropolitan area gathered to address best practices in veterans' employment and gain essential insight to help reduce staff costs, recruit a highly effective workforce and retain talent."The future economic competitiveness and long-term success of a community is directly tied to the quality and skills of its workforce," said Tony Pica, senior vice president and Mid-Atlantic Business Banking Group executive market president, Northern Virginia at Capital One Bank. "As we think about developing our workforce, we must support our veterans who are returning home and looking to transition their unique skills into gainful civilian employment. We're proud to support our veterans during their transition by helping them not only prepare for new job opportunities but also secure those jobs and keep them."Capital One's commitment to Easter Seals will specifically support the organization's new Veteran Staffing Network (VSN), a nonprofit staffing agency exclusively for veterans and their families. The VSN will provide comprehensive, wrap-around support services to both the veterans transitioning to civilian life and the businesses seeking to hire military servicemen and women. These wrap-around services provide access to programs designed to meet additional needs that may impact access and retention of employment, including:Operation Employ Vets employer training program, an internet-based interactive program designed to outline the benefits veterans bring to an organization. Easter Seals has worked with leading employers and community stakeholders to develop this program, as well as local departments of commerce, labor and veterans affairs.Little Warriors Early Education and Child Care program, which is designed to meet the unique needs of the wounded warrior, their children and spouses, while taking into consideration whether a family has recently had to relocate and addressing urgent needs for family stability.Veteran Caregiver Training, a comprehensive, multi-modal (classroom, web-based, and DVD/workbook) training for caregivers of veterans addressing a wide range of critical caregiving topics, such as self-care, obtaining benefits and support, behavior management, pain management, nutrition and wellness, and more.In addition, VSN hosts quarterly workshops, such as the "How Hiring Our Nation's Veterans Can Impact Your Bottom Line," for employers designed to educate business owners and HR professionals that may have concerns regarding hiring veterans and to dispel common misconceptions."Easter Seals understands the needs of veterans and their families. We are able to assist veterans in forging meaningful career paths and to connect them with long-term employment opportunities," said David Muir, Jr., senior vice president of the Veteran Staffing Network at Easter Seals. "We are extremely grateful to Capital One for its generous contribution and support, which will allow us to help more veterans and families to enter the workforce and reintegrate within their communities."According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001 was approximately 9.9 percent in 2012, nearly two percentage points higher than the national average for the general population. For select groups, such as veterans of ages 18 to 24 years old (20.4%), the average unemployment rate was markedly higher. A recent Career Builder survey showed that 65 percent of companies said that they would be willing to hire a veteran over another equally qualified candidate, and 29 percent of companies said that they are actively recruiting veterans. The Veteran Staffing Network aims to close the gap between job-ready veterans and businesses looking to hire veterans. The VSN also stays connected with veterans and their families to ensure job success and retention by pairing them with mentors and staying engaged with their employers. The Veteran Staffing Network builds on Capital One's three-year, $4.5 million commitment to support the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Hiring Our Heroes initiative, a program that provides job fairs and workforce training initiatives across the United States for veterans and military spouses. In March 2012, Capital One, the U.S. Chamber and National Chamber Foundation announced "Hiring 500,000 Heroes," a national campaign to engage the business community in committing to hire 500,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014. In addition, Capital One last year announced a three-year $800,000 investment in Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence to help women veteran small business owners grow their businesses.About Veteran Staffing NetworkThe Veteran Staffing Network (VSN) of Easter Seals Serving DC | MD | VA is a self-sustaining social enterprise model that serves the entire military community. Armstead will receive the award this week during the Jefferson Awards national ceremonies in Washington, D.C., which will recognize several Americans for their exemplary volunteer service"Every day ARAMARK employees devote their personal time and skills to enrich and nourish the lives of others, impacting millions of people," said Eric Foss, ARAMARK CEO and President. "Building local communities is part of our culture and values and a core focus for our business. I am extremely proud of Will, and the other employees that we are recognizing for their outstanding volunteer service."The Jefferson Awards is part of ARAMARK's commitment to encouraging and celebrating volunteer service and providing meaningful opportunities for employees to contribute to their communities. Since 2008, more than 250 employees have been recognized for their passion for public service through the ARAMARK Outstanding Volunteer Awards. Armstead is one of 60 employees honored by ARAMARK this year as outstanding volunteers for their work and impact.Armstead, of Stuart, Florida, was recognized for his commitment to multiple organizations that provide services and support to families, including Boys and Girls Clubs, The Alzheimers Community Care Board, and the PACE Center for Girls. Armstead also helps lead ARAMARK volunteer efforts in South Florida through ARAMARK Building Community (ABC), the company's philanthropic and volunteer program that enriches lives by improving family health and prepare youth and adults for the workforce in partnership with local community centers.Armstead said his parents "preached about giving back to others," and encouraged him to volunteer in his Brooklyn neighborhood. He joined the Army when he graduated from high school, and benefitted from a number of mentors who also encouraged his volunteerism.During his military career, which included two combat tours in Iraq, and in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, he often worked with children and families. Following his active service, he worked for a VA medical center before opening his own business, then joining ARAMARK Corrections in Kansas. He later took a position in Florida, and now manages food services for 13 correctional facilities in Florida. As a Big Brother with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization for several years in Kansas, he knew that there were many others, beyond the child he was mentoring, who needed help."This child could have cousins, brothers, friendsI saw 15 or 20 more kids that needed attention," he recalled. His passion led him to be selected to serve on the organization's board, where he became aware of another mentoring program for troubled children. Soon he was serving on the board of the Alliance Against Family Violence. When he and his family moved to Florida, and wanted to connect to people in the community, they started to volunteer. Armstead visited Boys and Girls Clubs frequently to gain a better understanding of what the children needed. He also became involved in The PACE Center for Girls, which helps girls ages 12 to 18 return to school. His volunteer work further extends to the needs of the elderly and he advocates for the elderly and their families through his work on the Alzheimers Community Care Board of Directors. He has also helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for non-profit organizations, and spent countless hours mentoring and tutoring children."As a company, ARAMARK is known for taking charge in building communities," he said. "We have some really, really dedicated people at ARAMARK who do a great jobit's awesome."Armstead and his wife Rachel have seven children, and he said he is a high-energy person who can always find time to help others."There are 24 hours in a day. There's plenty of time to give back to your community," he said.Co-founded in 1973 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard, the Jefferson Awards celebrate America's commitment to public service. The awards are given each year by the American Institute for Public Service, which recognizes American citizens devoted to community and volunteerism.About ARAMARK Building CommunityARAMARK Building Community enriches lives by helping families improve their health, secure jobs and move out of poverty. The intensive three-day event is being held at Wharton | San Francisco, the West Coast campus of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The seminar is designed to deepen educators' subject-matter knowledge and ability to incorporate financial literacy and business responsibility into their classrooms. Although an overwhelming majority of K-12 teachers agree that students should be educated on personal finance before graduating from high school, fewer than 20 percent of teachers feel equipped to teach such a class. Many cite costs as a major barrier to receiving the training necessary to teach the subject properly. By providing educators with lessons and equipping them with the appropriate resources, PwC and KWHS are taking a crucial step forward in effectively addressing this knowledge gap.The event features customized training sessions, speakers, panels and discussions led by leaders in business and economics. Noted guests include nationally recognized speakers, Wharton professors and alumni as well as PwC executives, including:Bernadette Birt, executive director -- Wharton | San FranciscoDouglas Collom, vice dean and adjunct professor -- Wharton | San FranciscoJim Henry, San Francisco market managing partner -- PwCJody Hoff, district manager of economic education and public programs -- Federal Reserve Bank of San FranciscoShannon Schuyler, corporate responsibility leader -- PwCVivek Wadhwa, best-selling author of "Immigrant Exodus" and vice president of innovation and research -- Singularity UniversityKeith Weigelt, professor of management - Wharton School"We are proud to have PwC's continued support and unwavering commitment to this program," said Mukul Pandya, executive director and editor-in-chief of Knowledge @ Wharton. "Our partnership allows us to address financial literacy in new and innovative ways by including a corporate perspective.""We are proud to have the opportunity to host educators and discuss the financial responsibility and leadership skills of our nation's youth," said Jim Henry, PwC's San Francisco managing partner. "We hope this seminar will encourage other businesses in our community, and across the U.S., to find ways to bring their expertise to educators and students in meaningful ways that address financial literacy issues in our education system."The initiative is part of PwC's Earn Your Future, a $160 million commitment -- comprising cash donations and one million service hours -- to address youth education with a focus on financial literacy. Over five years, PwC is leveraging its 37,000 people to develop the financial competency of more than 2.5 million youth and educators."Our commitment is one of magnitude and scalability. As we work towards our goal, partnerships with institutions like Knowledge @ Wharton allow us to thoughtfully and purposefully target key stakeholders, such as educators, who play a major role in helping students develop the financial knowledge and skills needed for life-long success," said Shannon Schuyler, US Corporate Responsibility Leader at PwC. "By leveraging the strengths and talents of our two organizations, we are more effectively able to tackle one side of this pressing issue."Following a successful inaugural conference in September 2012 on Wharton's Philadelphia campus, the second PwC-KWHS seminar at Wharton | San Francisco uses the same collaborative corporate-education model, but this time primarily serves West Coast educators. Attendees will also receive electronic copies of PwC's financial literacy curricula, which they can begin using immediately in their classrooms. In addition, attendees will learn about the many free financial literacy resources available to teachers and students through Knowledge @ Wharton High School. Upon completion of the seminar, participants will receive a certificate from Knowledge @ Wharton.Since its launch, KWHS has provided free, regularly updated materials for high school students and their teachers. The site, the first of its kind offered by a major university, offers articles, videos, learning simulations and numerous interactive tools.More information on the fall seminar at Wharton's Philadelphia campus will be available in the coming weeks. For a full overview of the seminar, please visit the website.About the Wharton School and Knowledge @ WhartonFounded in 1881 as the first collegiate business school, theWharton Schoolof the University of Pennsylvania is recognized globally for intellectual leadership and ongoing innovation across every major discipline of business education.
