The notion that only non-profits do good is not just outdated, but was never accurate to begin with. The reality is that "good" is not confined to the services provided by non-profits. The danger in believing that only non-profits do good is that we limit ourselves in our understanding of how, as individuals, we can do good.
Non-profit organizations enable others to do good by providing volunteer opportunities and a place to donate resources to, but there are so many other ways an individual can have a positive impact on our world: give directions to someone who is lost; recycle, but beyond that, try reducing your waste in the first place.
Doing good is not based on who is doing it, but that it is being done. What things in your life can have an impact on others? Being %u201Cthe change that [you] seek%u201D is not limited to obvious actions. Non-profits offer wonderful resources and services, but we should not limit ourselves to believing this type of organization is the only way to do good.

Joylani, I think your idea is Obamaesque in that it encourages acts of kindness on the part of individuals, regardless of consequence or reward. Recycling is like voting, one person's action may be statistically insignificant, but in aggregate it makes all the difference. I think its also important that our interpretation of good is independent of any religion or ideology, rather it should be assessed on its impact on society and the world. Environmentalism is one example of a least common denominator which ought to have great unifying potential since we all share the same planet. Good idea, and good luck!

Not only can profitable companies make a difference, but often with the motivation can impact on a much larger scale with support of their immense resources. In fact, by a profitable company doing good around the world puts their reputation in a positive light, drawing compassionate consumers towards their product or services.

Doing true good comes from a heart that has the best interests of the other person first and expects nothing in return. Joylani, I think that sounds like you...

Joylani has her focus in the right place...the recipients' best interests. As she says, "Doing good is not based on who is doing it, but that it is being done." She also broadens the appeal to everyone; just reading her response challenges me to think about what I can do. A real value is that Joylani will not be limited in her thinking or because of what has been tried or what the conventional wisdom is...she considers realities and is open to finding new ways to be sure services can be maximally mobilized.
