I am an accidental filmmaker. The story goes that I was studying for a career in the non-profit
sector. During my final year of graduate school, I decided to collaborate with my husband (who had
recently received MTV India’s Best Music Video Award), and make short entertaining films that
could inspire change. We started a company, global rickshaw, with the idea that we can use the
creative and professional talent from the film industry to create visually interesting and
technically sound short films in partnership with non-profits organizations. In three years, we have
made nearly a dozen films and have learned so much from our experiences: www.globalrickshaw.com.
As a leader, I depend on a few things for success: listening to the people around me, challenging
myself each and every day, and always striving to work harder. My life experiences have taught me
the importance of leading by example. Whenever we are shooting a film, I am full of energy, speak
positively to my staff and crew, and I rarely sit down. As a result, we always keep to our schedule,
our shoots go smoothly, and everyone leaves proud of a good day’s work.
I would bring to the India Social Entrepreneurship Journey excellent listening and cross-cultural
communication skills, thoughtful questions, and an open mind. My time in graduate school taught me
about Social Entrepreneurship from an academic perspective. Although I have developed a good
understanding of different business models, metrics, and the importance of sustainability; I am
eager to learn from personal interactions with individuals and organizations so I can better
understand how they measure success and manage to bridge the non-profit and for-profit worlds.
There will be many take away messages from this journey which will inspire me with fresh ideas and
new topics for global rickshaw films. I would like to take these ideas and share them with my
creative peers to see how we can make interesting public service announcements and short films that
will target Indian audiences. During the journey, I would also plan to create a series of short and
catchy films about the experience so the messages and lessons learned can travel to a wider
audience.
