Friends of The Children NY
Changing the destiny of NYC’s most at-risk children…
one child at a time
Do you realize that many states budget for juvenile jails 10 years out based on the number of 3rd graders who fail their reading tests?
It is shocking because there is a proven way to change that destiny.
FOTC New York intervenes in the lives of children who need a helping hand the most – the ones on a path to destruction.
We focus on avoiding negatives like jail, gangs, pregnancy… and helping them to be productive members of society, instead of destructive, dangerous adults.
Derek’s Story
Derrick’s story is a painful saga of neglect and violence. He does not know his father, his mother struggles with drug use, and his brothers are active gang members.
FOTC NY intervened when Derrick was five and dominating his kindergarten classroom with violent behavior. He would routinely swear at teachers, refuse to participate and even struck a parent visiting the classroom.
Derrick’s Friend Howard worked doggedly to help close the academic and social gaps, while broadening Derrick’s experience beyond the boundaries of his neighborhood. Five years later, Derrick is six months above grade level and regularly spouts advice learned from his Friend. Recently Derrick winked at Howard and remarked “totally inappropriate” after walking past a group of swearing teens.
Derrick is a living example of our mission “to change the destiny of NYC’s most at-risk Children … one Child at a time”.
FOCNY takes the most at risk 5 and 6 year olds and puts them into an environment where they have a chance in life - a chance to graduate high school and go to college - a chance to stay out of the juvenile system and a chance not to be a teen parent - at a tremendous financial savings to society - but the program takes money to run, to pay its mentors and too be there when it counts for the children - your grant will help.
