Angelica Empowers Patients To Better Their Community
Angelica strengthens local community by working for and with 2000 long term care patients at the Coler Goldwater Specialty Hospital on Roosevelt Island. We work directly with patient committees to identify ways to improve their quality of life and make them realities. The group was started by former hospital volunteers in 2006.
Many of these patients are economically disadvantaged individuals from diverse backgrounds who will reside in the hospital for the rest of their lives, and do not have many regular visitors.
Our focus is on helping patients achieve greater independence and choice through recreational, cultural and social programs. Our signature event, a Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Ball, was started with patient support in 2006 and has grown every year. Other events include performances by outside groups, spa days for treatments and makeovers, a hip hop music program for young patients, a karaoke program, photography club, visual arts program, chess club and horticultural therapy
The most important part of our philosophy is patient involvement. We work with patients to plan and execute programs and brainstorm about activities for the future. We believe this is an invaluable outlet for patients to express their creativity, enhance leadership skills and advocate for each other.
We are always seeking to expand our programs. As patient participation grows, we are partnering with other civic and non-profit organizations to bring additional volunteers to the hospital and exploring ways to help patients continue their education and develop professional skills.
Chevron takes forefront in caring for is area of operation, gives scholarship, built schools/renovate old ones, supply equipments and other social amenities to its area of operation, this is commendable and should be emulated.
