Greenbuild 2010 Conference Goes “Carbon-Neutral” with the Help of Renewable Energy Donations and USGBC Offset Commitment

Summary: 

Leonardo Academy announced today that the emissions resulting from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)’s annual Greenbuild International Conference & Exposition have been completely offset.  The offset was made possible through the generous donation of renewable energy certificates (RECs) from WindCurrent, and a commitment from the USGBC to provide 100 percent of the remaining emissions offsets needed to make Greenbuild 2010 a carbon-neutral event. Leonardo Academy’s Cleaner and Greener® Program calculated the emissions resulting from the energy used at the event facility, as well as for travel, meals, and lodging associated with the event.

Today, Microsoft launched Imagine Cup Solve This, a new program to provide inspiration for students looking to help solve the world’s toughest problems through technology. IGOs, NGOs and non-profits will now be able to crowd-source ideas from brilliant and passionate students competing in the Microsoft’s global tech competition, the Imagine Cup, to develop solutions that address their needs.

As part of its Fire Suppression Sustainability Program, Leonardo Academy today released a draft report titled: “Sustainability Assessment and Improvement Strategy Development for the Fire Suppression Industry: An Overview of Issues”. Companies and organizations are invited to participate in a brief survey requesting some high level information about company building portfolios and building fire suppression systems from a sustainability viewpoint.

New Officers and Member Announced; Meeting Now Scheduled for March for the National Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee

Leonardo Academy has announced the new officers of the National Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee.   They are Brian McElroy of Driscoll’s Strawberry Associates, Chair; Mike Wanless of Tate Dog Wines, Vice Chair; Grace Gershuny of GAIA Services, Secretary; and Will Healy of Ball Horticultural, Vice Secretary. Leonardo Academy announced that Jason Wadsworth, Corporate Sustainability Coordinator with Wegmans Food Markets, has been selected as a new member of the National Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee in the User Category. As previously announced, applicants are currently being recruited for the open seats. Leonardo Academy announced that the National Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee meeting has been rescheduled to March 2011.

This project is focused on the sustainability impacts and risks of fire suppression systems and the fire suppression industry as a whole. This project includes a Building Fire Suppression field research project to collect data about the fire suppression systems currently in buildings.  Companies and organizations are invited to participate in a brief survey. Initial support of this project has been provided by Tyco International.

Leonardo Academy Awarded $600,000 for Clean Diesel Projects

Summary: 

Leonardo Academy has been awarded $600,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency to help reduce emissions from diesel engines. EPA, Region 5 and the Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative awarded the grant as part of the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program. Leonardo Academy will use the grant for clean diesel projects in Wisconsin that significantly reduce fuel emissions from long-haul trucks, school bus and municipal bus fleets. Future opportunites for participation in this project are available.
