Aug. 1, marks this year’s Earth Overshoot Day, the day of the year by which humanity has exhausted its annual resource budget. Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1, humanity used more from nature than the planet’s ecosystems are able to renew in the entire year.
Running out of planet is a risk. And we believe the answer is "one-planet prosperity." What does this mean?
One day of the year has started to appear earlier and earlier on the calendar: Earth Overshoot Day. This year falls on August 1st. Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth’ s ecosystems can renew in that year. What does this date mean?
Every two weeks I get a paycheck (thanks, Michael!). Money comes in, and money goes out. Some goes to savings/retirement, and the rest is what I live off of today. Sometimes I need to use credit to pay for a big purchase, and then I wind up paying it back each month. I’m guessing you’re familiar with this drill.
If I spend more than I bring in every month, eventually I’m going to have a problem.
Humanity is currently using nature 1.7 times faster than our planet’s ecosystems can regenerate. On August 1, humanity will have used nature’s resource budget for the entire year, according to Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that has pioneered the Ecological Footprint resource accounting metric. Since the world went into ecological overshoot in the 1970s, D-day of August 1 this year will be the earliest.

It’s hot here in Central Texas. Like 100°F hot (about 38°C). And while we sweat our way between air-conditioned locations, we’ll probably grab an ice-cold beverage. You have to stay hydrated after all.
And it’s a pretty good bet that drink will arrive with a plastic straw.
The world’s resources are finite. Over the next few decades the demand for energy, clean water and natural resources will increase substantially due to population growth and economic development. As a result, there will be fewer resources available to support the world’s growing needs. In addition, air and water pollution continue to adversely impact human health, causing respiratory and water-borne illnesses. At Merck, we are working to find new ways to reduce our use of natural resources and lower our environmental impacts.
