Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose (CECP), a coalition of more than 200 of the world’s largest companies, recently released its annual survey of corporate philanthropy and employee engagement in 2018 (Giving in Numbers). This year, 250 multi-billion-dollar companies with aggregate revenues of more than $7.9 trillion participated in the survey.
2019 was a pivotal year in Corporate Social Responsibility as the concepts of corporate responsibility and sustainability received significant media attention, and the trends that I identified last year at this time (better dialogue, more learning, more disaster prevention, greater equity and the growing importance of Generation Z-ers) remained timely and relevant. Still, 2020 promises to bring more challenges and opportunities to the field, and leaders should pay attention to these developing global trends in Corporate Social Responsibility:

Pro bono service has the ingredients for a great story—diverse perspective, cross-sector collaboration, personal and professional growth, all in service of positive social change. But we know storytelling isn't that simple.
We recognize that the world’s most pressing social issues are persistent and complex. Although we’re pro bono evangelists, we know that it isn’t a magic bullet—pro bono service alone isn’t enough to address the problems that society faces.
As we settle into the new year, we find ourselves reflecting on the state of corporate pro bono, the exciting ways in which the field has evolved over the last year, and what's ahead in 2019. Taproot's Advisory Services team recently conducted an inaugural study of companies doing pro bono as a way to understand industry-wide trends and share out key observations.
The beginning of a new year is always a good time to be reconsidering one's reading list. With apologies to friends who have written terrific books on leadership and corporate social responsibility, the following are the five books (in alphabetical order) that I think leaders should be reading (or in some cases, re-reading) this year. Some of them are new, some are more vintage, but all of them have lessons for leaders that are not only worthwhile, but increasing important in our highly competitive and chaotic world.

Happy Holidays! As we close out 2018, the Common Impact team is reflecting on the significant impact we've made with our partners this past year. We are excited to see skills-based volunteerism continue to play an important role in building stronger communities and developing purpose-driven professionals across all sectors. While we are proud of what we have accomplished so far, we know there is more work to be done in 2019 and beyond to continue to drive meaningful community partnerships.
