To determine the Best Workplaces for Women, Great Place to Work analyzed anonymous survey feedback representing more than 4.6 million employees at Great Place to Work-CertifiedTM organizations. Employees responded to more than 60 survey questions anonymously rating their employers.
Karla Bracamonte, a Mexican immigrant, worked as a custodian at Arizona State University. One day, she walked past a whiteboard with unfinished algebraic equations written on it.
“I turned to my coworker at the time and I told them, ‘I can do this,’” Bracamonte said.
Realizing her talent, a professor and her coworkers encouraged her to apply for classes at ASU, where university staff could get discounts on tuition. However, as a first-generation college student with very little understanding of English, she had barriers to overcome.
Viacom’s multi-year tech internship program helps young women launch careers.

Lauren Clark and Emily Lo have a lot in common. Both entered Viacom’s Girls Who Code summer immersion program in 2015, its inaugural year. Both just wrapped up their third year of the company’s long-term internship program. And both major in computer science-related fields at upstate New York colleges.
And in multiple years of college-level technology instruction at two separate institutions, each has had exactly one female professor.
