National Manufacturing Day is Friday, Oct. 4, a day to celebrate the industry and inspire the next generation of manufacturers.
Nearly 80% of American manufacturers can’t find the skilled workers they need—part of this gap could be addressed with women. Women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, but hold less than a third of the manufacturing jobs.¹ The logical solution is right in front of us—bring more women into manufacturing.
Last month, the Business Roundtable modernized its principles on the role of a corporation. The purpose for many corporations now encompasses this list: value for customers, investing in employees, fostering diversity and inclusion, dealing fairly and ethically with suppliers, supporting the communities in which we work, and protecting the environment.

One of the first things I heard as I began my career in cybersecurity was, “Cyber is not for you because you’re a mom.” I was also told, “You’ll never see your kids.” As a first time mother of a six-week old baby, I had doubts about starting my cyber career. But, I thought about all of the women and mothers who are doctors, surgeons, and military commanders and decided, if they can do those jobs, I’m sure I can do this one.
As thousands of members of Generation Z return to campus this fall, those who have graduated are taking their new credentials to the marketplace. And for many, their employer of choice is Booz Allen, which retains its No. 6 ranking on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Employers for New Grads for 2019.
Doing well while doing good
To compile the list, Forbes and research firm Statista surveyed over 10,000 young professionals across the nation. How would they rate their own employer, and which other companies would they recommend within their industry?
