Educators across D.C., Maryland and Virginia celebrated STEM on Wednesday, November 14 through a day of free professional development thanks to Discovery Education and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The ‘Day of Discovery’ event, part of Discovery Education and TCS’ Ignite My Future in School initiative, promotes computational thinking through a variety of educational resources and interactive activities, giving teachers unique insight and strategies to effectively teach students 21st century skills.

When I decided to pursue a career in the military, I wasn’t sure whether it would be for 5 years or 20 years. I was passionate about serving our country and drawn to the Marine Corps’ camaraderie and values of “Honor, Courage, and Commitment”. I’ll be forever grateful for the experiences the Marine Corps provided me and, most importantly, the Marines with whom I served.
Ultimately, I decided to leave the military for business school and a new mission. I believe that the private sector’s resources can and should be used to help solve our world’s most pressing challenges.
Celebrating Veterans Day with U.S. Navy vet and Symantec C3 graduate Leslie Washington
Leslie Washington is a firm believer in learning concrete skills. Coming from a big military family, she joined the U.S. Navy after high school, excited about the real world experience and travel opportunities that lay ahead. From standing on plane wings while washing down aircrafts, to organizing facilities for command events, to participating in surveillance flights during Desert Storm, Leslie’s military career was unique to say the least.
The value of military veterans extends well beyond our communities; as mission-driven leaders, they’re critical to employers like Cisco in today’s digital economy. And this week, as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day and Veterans Day, it is an especially important time to recognize their contributions while serving in the military and as part of the civilian workforce.
In 2016, Whirlpool Corporation launched its Air cXc program in Florida in an effort to find skilled and talented military and military family members to support its Whirlpool Customer eXperience Centers (cXc). Since then, the program has expanded across nine states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Washington, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia and Hawaii. This program has proven to benefit both employees and Whirlpool Corporation in many different ways.

Ex-Marine from Ohio is training to become a lineworker
Wayne Hambrick worked a couple of jobs after a back injury ended his career in the Marines. But he hadn’t found what he was looking for – until he got a position working outside in sometimes difficult conditions with long hours.
Hambrick joined the Marines when he was 21. It happened to be a natural fit, with plenty of his relatives having served in the military, including a grandfather who was a POW in Korea.
The Military Spouse Career Connection aims to turn jobs into careers
BENTONVILLE, Ark., November 12, 2018 /3BL Media/ – Walmart today announced it will give hiring preference to military spouses, becoming the largest U.S. company to make such a commitment. The Military Spouse Career Connection, a new initiative by Walmart to recruit and hire military spouses, complements the 2013 Veterans Welcome Home commitment, enhanced in 2015, to hire 250,000 military veterans by 2020, a goal it is on track to surpass next year.
