Driving tourism back to Puerto Rico is a business priority as it continues to feel the effects of a devastating hurricane season in late 2017. Known for its pristine beaches and colorful coral reefs, restoring life underwater is among the many ways Bacardi and Mercy Corps are helping promote tourism, a major source of income for many communities on the island. With funding by Bacardi and others, Mercy Corps teamed up with residents, business owners and tourists for two underwater clean ups at Rompeolas, a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Legg Mason and Jupiter Asset Management joined forces to co-sponsor a run on April 11th in Stockholm, Sweden, to benefit Plastic Oceans, a pioneer in the fight against plastics in our seas.

 “The Race Against Plastic (TRAP)” inaugural 10k featured 25 clients dusting off their running shoes and joining together in the fight to reduce polluting our oceans with plastics. Runners and supporters raised nearly $10,000 for the cause!

On Earth Day and every day, implanted radio tags with satellite transponders track endangered species so conservationists can learn more about their habits and habitat. For sea creatures like whales and dolphins, this means studying  the impact of threats including water pollution, noise pollution, and fishing nets.  

However, such data-gathering is often easier said than done. The volume of the world’s oceans is a staggering 1.4 billion cubic kilometers. The current network of satellites is limited in terms of coverage and the speed of data transmission.
