Building a Field of Dreams for a Neighborhood in Need

Sometimes a football field is more than a place to play football.

For Chris Battaglia, principal of Benjamin Franklin High School at Masonville Cove in Baltimore, Maryland, a new athletic facility under construction is an urban field of dreams, a safe, clean gathering space for students and families in a neighborhood plagued by crime and lacking some of the basics. (There’s no supermarket nearby, for instance.)

In August, we announced that commercial production had begun – safely, on schedule and within budget – at our Tanami Expansion Project in Australia’s Northern Territory. The $120 million capital investment is expected to increase annual gold production at the mine by 80,000 ounces per year, lower all-in sustaining costs and extend mine life by three years.

Summer just ended and along with it my wonderful experience interning at Hewlett Packard Labs in Palo Alto. But thankfully I have some great memories to remember it by, from working with some really talented teammates to helping get local kids interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Being a Labs intern turned out to be much more fun than just sitting in a cube doing research. Our mentors and especially the intern coordinators arranged for us to have many opportunities for bonding with fellow interns and getting to know other researchers.
