U.S. Department of Education & GE Foundation-Funded Effort Aims to Increase College-Going Success among High School Students in Erie

The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and the GE Foundation have initiated the GO College program in Erie, supported by a $24 million grant. Through the program, students will obtain increased access to services that assist them in attending college and graduating successfully. Three local organizations have partnered with high schools to jumpstart the program in motion; Gannon University, the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) and the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5 (IU5). These organizations are working alongside the schools to simplify the preparation and process of going to college for the families and students attending. Activities such as college fairs, workshops on financial aid and individual counseling will be available to all students at Central...

As business organizations increasingly invest in corporate social responsibility (CSR), it becomes critical to accurately examine the effects of these endeavors. In particular, business leaders should be able to rely on a coherent set of metrics to assess and prioritize the goals of different stakeholders—the ultimate beneficiaries of CSR programs—and to regularly evaluate progress made by the company in pursuing those goals. This report discusses a model for measuring the efficient and effective use of corporate resources allocated to CSR activities.

Wastewater reuse is becoming a more wildly common practice as a sustainable way to control limited water supplies and many Middle Eastern countries are considering their reuse objectives. For example, Saudi Arabia has set a target of 11 percent of its water use to come from treated wastewater, which is suitable for domestic and industrial uses such as landscaping. This article describes the GE Saudi Water Reuse Summit that took place so that global and regional government and industry leaders could meet to explore ways to expand water reuse actions whilst showing inventive technologies.
