Passenger ferries, luxury tourist boats, and coastal freighters could all, in theory, benefit from the system. Eco Marine Power is trying to draw the attention of governments who could use the technology on naval vessels.Solar Sailor, another company leading the way in hybrid power technology for ships currently has products available for private yachts, tourist cruisers, and ferries, in addition to the larger vessels targeted by Eco Marine Power.Solar Sailor hit their stride back in 2008 when they signed an agreement with China's largest shipping line, COSCO, to develop technology for tanker and bulk ship carriers. The company has been on an award collecting spree since their founding in 1999, and boast such accolades as the Winner of Conde Nast Traveler's Innovation and Design Awards (2010) and Italian Design Well-Tech Award (2009).Solar panels are not a rare sight on personal yachts, but as technology continues to develop, they may begin to play a more significant role in the lives of sea-faring travelers. While unrest and major political changes in the Middle East and North Africa continue to push fuel prices up, alternative sources of energy begin to warrant a second look from many. While it is frustrating that unpredictable oil prices tend to spark this consideration only once or twice a year, and as prices fall momentarily talk of a better path predictably peters out, but the success of reducing fossil fuel use on both a large scale (ocean liners) and in a perceptible manner (on tourist ferries and private yachts) will undoubtedly be instrumental in creating lasting change.Photo Credit: afronie

LGBT Rights Tour Debuts in Cuba: Rainbow-Washing or Real Engagement?

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/LGBT-Rights-Tour-Debuts-in-Cuba--Rainbow-Washing-or-Real-Engagement/45818.html

"If someone is responsible, it is me" Fidel Castro admitted to Mexican newspaper La Jornada in August 2010, when discussing the "injustice" that was years of government persecution suffered by the LGBT community under his Communist regime. After the 1959 Cuban Revolution, the government arrested homosexuals and shipped them off to brutal "re-education" labor camps, where many disappeared. Being gay was illegal for many years, and anti-gay purges were frequent.Government sanctioned discrimination and hatred was not significantly reduced until the mid-1970s.Fast forward to 2011, and a Cuban NGO headed up by Fidel's niece (and current President Raul Castro's daughter), Dr. Mariela Castro Espin, will be playing host to North Americans interested in learning about LGBT issues in Cuba. The tour runs from May 7 to May 15, 2011 and includes visits with Dr. Espin, a renowned sexologist and advocate for LGBT rights, meetings with various LGBT activists, a trip to the ballet, a fashion show, and a visit to an eco-community and urban farm. The promotional tone of the tour is certainly cheery and positive-- there is not a single reference to the handful of shameful decades of persecution against gays, lesbians, and transgendered people. According to their website:Cuba regards homophobia, not homosexuality, as the problem. Its efforts to remove legal and social barriers impeding dignity and parity for sexual minorities are exemplary. Cuba is the benchmark for LGBT freedom in Latin America and a global leader in gender and sexual equality. While homophobia is certainly a problem, so is historical amnesia. There is no indication in their materials that there will be any discussion of the country's embarrassing past. Also, if any country deserves to be the benchmark of LGBT rights in the Americas, it is Argentina, as unlike Cuba they have already extended full marriage rights to their citizens.Cuba should be applauded for making many positive legal and social changes to benefit the gay and transgendered community, including free sex change surgery, but the country still has room for improvement. Glossing over the past will not help the country move towards permanent change. The existence of an LGBT tour highlights some of the broader changes that are occurring in Cuba following Fidel's decision to step down.Fidel recently admitted that "the Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore" in an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic. Since power has been transferred to Raul, there have been incremental changes signaling that the country may be moving more towards capitalism, and increased openness. While at first glance the LGBT tour may seem a bit manufactured, the opportunity to visit a politically unique country on the precipice of major change should not be missed.Photo Credit: Matt Phipps

Top Certifier of Sustainable Travel Opens New Paris Office

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Top-Certifier-of-Sustainable-Travel-Opens-New-Paris-Office/45597.html

EarthCheck, one of the world's top providers of certifications for the sustainable travel and tourism industry, will be opening up an office in Paris, France. The office opening was announced following impressive company growth in Europe. The company is optimistic about the future, as they point to the financial benefits of sustainable business operations as a major draw for any company.EarthCheck currently has around 1,100 clients in 65 countries worldwide. The company carries out benchmarking and certification activities for the operational practices of companies. It is the largest environmental management system in use in the tourism and travel industry, but also offers programs for schools, businesses, and community organizations.EarthCheck works with companies to create and manage reports on where wastage is occurring in their day to day operations. They help clients reduce their consumption of natural resources, effectively saving the companies money and leaving a lighter environmental footprint. The company serves clients such as InterContinental Hotels Group, ACCOR, Sandals Hotels and Resorts, Langham Hotels International, Banyan Tree, and Carlson Asia Pacific. Their products are available in English, French, Spanish, and German with plans to add additional languages."Optimal performance is the dream of every business manager, regardless of which company they operate in," said Helen Feustel, the new head of the Paris office."EarthCheck brings about triple bottom line gains and helps reduce carbon emissions. Twenty to 30 percent savings are common place in the first year of application, so it's little wonder that market leaders have been quick to the uptake."After spending a decade studying companies in the tourism and travel industry, EarthCheck developed their own Baseline and Best Practices measurements to evaluate companies from. The company then helps train employees and management to implement practices to improve their efficiency. They comply with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, The World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the International Organization for Standardization 14064 range of standards for greenhouse gas accounting. The fact that EarthCheck is selling its online management services and consulting, while simultaneously running the certification process is a bit troubling, and points to the need for a single, well-regarded and internationally recognized standard for sustainable travel providers. In the meantime, the company is providing a much needed service to an expanding and increasingly aware market.Photo Credit: friedchuckles

Easy Trip Planning for Responsible Travelers

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Easy-Trip-Planning-for-Responsible-Travelers/45345.html

Perhaps the biggest challenge to traveling sustainably is the research load required. Trip planning is exciting, but can be overwhelming for those who are already burnt out from working and looking forward to a care-free escape.Online searches and word of mouth oftentimes do not stack up to what is actually happening once a traveler arrives at her destination.Detour Destinations has taken much of the grunt work out of this aspect of trip planning through offering an online traveler marketplace, where buyers can search for local sustainable tour companies in Africa and South and Central America.Detour does not allow any self-styled sustainable travel company to list themselves on their site. Instead, they only feature the leading companies in the sustainable travel field. Each company is put through a rigorous screening process which ensures that local guides are used and the cultural and environmental highlights of the area are respected by the provider. The company does not actually operate any of the trips it sells on its website, but instead uses firsthand knowledge to select the highest quality socially and environmentally responsible tour companies who run amazing trips and are committed to investing back in the communities the tourism affects. The direct investment back into these communities ensures that local sites and cultures are preserved and ecosystems protected. The company was founded by an adventure travel expert, and is run by a staff of nomadic adventure lovers-- many of whom have seen many of the places featured on the site.Detour does site visits, interviews, and elicits feedback from its customers in order to screen out inferior providers. The local providers all agree to sell their trips for the same price one would receive if booking locally. Many US or European based tour operators would charge significantly more than these local providers, making Detour a more accessible option for budget travelers.Detour Destinations offers booking and information to a wide variety of trips including some of the most popular destinations in South America such as Galapagos, Machu Picchu, and Patagonia. As the largest obstacle to the average traveler enjoying a vacation in a sustainable way is oftentimes the time investment necessary for seeking out an ideal provider, Detour Destinations provides a great resources for those who enjoy spending their time traveling sustainably rather than spending it overwhelmed by planning stress.Photo Credit: Peru Travel

New Language Learning Apps for Engaged Traveler

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/New-Language-Learning-Apps-for-Engaged-Traveler/45334.html

A wide range of new language learning apps are available from Hello-Hello, an interactive online education course created for a community of learners committed to learning new languages while helping others do the same.As part of traveling sustainably is an increased awareness of the communities one is visiting, even a basic knowledge of the local tongue will help smooth over rough communication barriers.Hello-Hello provides a free set of interactive lesson plans while connecting the learner to Read Full Article

A wide range of new language learning apps are available from Hello-Hello, an interactive online education course created for a community of learners committed to learning new languages while helping others do the same.As part of traveling sustainably is an increased awareness of the communities one is visiting, even a basic knowledge of the local tongue will help smooth over rough communication barriers.Hello-Hello provides a free set of interactive lesson plans while connecting the learner to language experts and native speakers who can give constructive, live feedback during the learning process. The lessons were developed jointly with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and follow a proven methodology for language learning. In addition to the opportunity to learn, the site allows any user to act as a teacher by communicating with students of their native tongue.Online courses are available in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian. The new app is available in basic versions of English, Chinese, Dutch, German, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish. Around 60% of the island is set aside as a reserve, and only 5% will be built upon, creating a tranquil space for those travelers who wish to relax and connect with their natural surroundings. The island includes both a boutique hotel and vacation homes for sale. The developers appear to be committed to creating a green location through planning to attain LEED certification, using significant amounts of wind and solar power, creating a recycling and composting program, using mostly battery-powered electric vehicles, and planting native plants for landscaping purposes. In addition, Isla Palenque will boast an on site organic garden for the produce needs of the island, cutting down on the need to ship in many fruits and vegetables from afar. The guest suites will also be open air-- promoting a closer connection with the stunning surroundings while eliminating the energy waste inherent in relying solely on traditional air conditioning systems.Guests will not be forced to suffer through sweat lodge conditions, as the living spaces at Palenque use passive or "bioclimatic" design, and many rooms come equipped with optional air conditioning systems. Industrial sized fans will be utilized to keep communal spaces cool without requiring excessive amounts of energy. Ventilation and shading are utilized elegantly to create spaces that are breezy and comfortable while combining the comforts of a luxurious hotel with the beauty and vitality of the tropical jungle. The US firm 4240 Architecture headed up the unique design, which is drawing comparisons to Jade Mount in St. Lucia and the Four Seasons in Hawaii.A model estate is currently on premises for those interested in potentially investing in a vacation home on the island. And for those without the cash for a beach side vacation home?Get on that video.Photo Credit: Rictor Norton & David Allen

New Eco-App for Kids Now on iTunes

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/New-Eco-App-for-Kids-Now-on-iTunes/44602.html

The "Let's Go Chipper" line of eco-educational apps for children has been expanded with three new apps aimed at getting children excited about nature and the environment.Chipper is a curious and adventurous squirrel from the city who serves as a guide for children interested in camping, nature, animals, and the fun of the outdoors. He once again claimed that "no tarmac road will be built through the Serengeti"-- an oft-cited statement designed to distract from the real issue at hand. Each year, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania hosts the spectacular migration of over a million wildebeest. Joined by thousands of gazelles and zebras, the wildebeest follow the rains through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, covering over 1,300 miles. The fossil record indicates that this migration may have been taking place for close to a million years. Olivia Judson eloquently describes it as "the last great migration on Earth."This impressive site is at risk of vanishing forever, as the Tanzanian government moves forward with the ill-conceived plan of building a major commercial highway across the Serengeti migration path, against the advice of concerned scientists and environmentalists around the world who point out the significant loss of wildlife and environmental degradation the project will cause. The Frankfurt Zoological Society explains:We sincerely believe that the road will have disastrous effects on the entire ecosystem. The northern parts of the Serengeti and the adjacent Masai Mara are critical for the wildebeest and zebra migration during the dry season, as it is the only permanent year-round water source for these herds. Recent calculations show that if wildebeest were to be cut off from these critical dry season areas, the population would likely decline from 1.3 million animals to about 200,000 (meaning a collapse to far less than a quarter of its current population and most likely the end of the great migration).President Kikwete is attempting to spin the situation by arguing that the road will not be paved. Whether the road eventually becomes paved or not is not as important as the simple fact that ever-increasing traffic will lead to significant environmental problems. According to the government's own study, there will be over 800 vehicles a day by 2015 and 3,000 a day by 2035. By the end of 2016, over a million vehicles will have used this highway. The Serengeti is an extremely popular destination for green travelers, and for good reason. Several tour operators have come out against the highway, as the project will severely damage their industry in the long term. The coalition Save the Serengeti has formed against the project, but plans continue to move ahead.Photo credit: David Dennis

Revolutionary Tourism: Time for a Trip to Tunisia?

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Revolutionary-Tourism--Time-for-a-Trip-to-Tunisia/44224.html

The protests in Tunisia left the tourism sector devastated, but the new interim government is already arguing that Tunisia is ready for visitors."The revolution that this country just went through offers new opportunities insofar as it has shown off an extraordinary people to the world," said the new tourism minister Mehdi Haouas.Tunisia has long been a popular vacation destination for many Europeans who come to relax at tranquil Mediterranean resorts, soaking up the simple pleasures of jasmine Read Full Article

The protests in Tunisia left the tourism sector devastated, but the new interim government is already arguing that Tunisia is ready for visitors."The revolution that this country just went through offers new opportunities insofar as it has shown off an extraordinary people to the world," said the new tourism minister Mehdi Haouas.Tunisia has long been a popular vacation destination for many Europeans who come to relax at tranquil Mediterranean resorts, soaking up the simple pleasures of jasmine perfumed air and freshly caught grilled fish. This image of the country as a nice beach getaway is one of the reasons the protests caught so many by surprise-- beneath the picturesque surface, there were real social and political problems brewing. Many are arguing that tourists should visit Tunisia simply to inject money back into the economy, after tourism revenues dropped 40% in January, while the protests were taking place."We want to reassure all our friendly countries who send their citizens on vacation in Tunisia, that they can from now on do so in total security in addition to an atmosphere of absolute freedom," Mr. Haouas said. While Tunisia is indeed a wonderful country to visit, the revolution that caught many educated and well-traveled Westerners by surprise should serve as a reminder about one of the many challenging pleasures of travel-- in-country knowledge.Staring into crystalline waters with the Blackberry lodged safely at the bottom of the luggage encourages a type of relaxation that oftentimes precludes a bit of cultural and historical exploration. For those who have travelled a much longer distance to reach Tunisia, the cultural experience is oftentimes a more salient feature in their trip. As Jerry Sorkin, the founder of TunisUSA explained:While American tourists have always been a very small minority of Tunisia's tourism industry, they represent a distinct group of tourists from the millions of European tourists who come to spend their time in a Tunisian seaside resort. Rather, Americans come to Tunisia to appreciate the diverse cultural attributes of the county: from the extensive archaeological sites of Roman and pre-Roman origin, to the indigenous architecture of the southern desert regions. Now, the new attraction is seeing a civil society that appears to be going through an orderly transition. While there are plenty of Americans who come simply to enjoy the beach, and tons of Europeans who enjoy the architecture and museums (and people not from Europe or the States who do both), the point that different travelers have different goals is a cogent one.TunisUSA is a great example of one tour operator who is focused on delivering a rewarding, specialized experience to those who are interested in a specific cultural or historic segment of the country. Most people who self-identify as more "sustainable" travelers, and those who consider their impact on a region, typically have an interest in the everyday lives of people who live there. If anything, the "surprising" revolution in Tunisia should be a reminder that when traveling, it is enriching to slow down and get to know some of the people you are surrounded by.Photo Credit: Isaac Bolger

Breakthrough UN Partnership to Improve Sustainable Travel

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Breakthrough-UN-Partnership-to-Improve-Sustainable-Travel/43925.html

Sustainable travel advocates are applauding the recent announcement of the new Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism, which aims to connect all stakeholders in the sustainable tourism industry. With the goal of "transforming tourism worldwide" the partnership was appropriately established in Costa Rica at the first General Meeting. The partnership will be composed of five UN organizations, 18 national governments, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), private compa Read Full Article

The partnership will be composed of five UN organizations, 18 national governments, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), private companies, and non-profits with the shared goals of improving policies, creating projects, and developing a global communication platform for those involved in the tourism sector."The broad geographic scope of the Partnership, as well as the depth of its members' expertise, will enable it to adapt, replicate, and scale-up successful projects initiated by any partner in other regions; engaging the public and private sectors and consumers, identifying and setting-up project funding opportunities and informing on policy which will benefit the development and promotion of sustainability in tourism," said Grard Ruiz, Chairman of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the UN Environment Program (UNEP) serve as key partners in the organization, along with the governments of France, Costa Rica, and Norway. During the first meeting, France was elected as President of the Partnership Steering Committee and Costa Rica as Vice-Chair.Gina Guillen Grillo, the Senior Advisor to the Minister of Tourism of Costa Rica emphasized the focus on communication between partners, "The Partnership will be an up-to-date, dynamic forum where countries that are interested in tourism which is truly sustainable will be able to learn from the successful efforts of the other members and obtain technical assistance, and which will promote constant dialogue, the exchange of experiences, and seek solutions to the problems that are common to the tourism sector."The Secretariat of the organization will be organized withinUNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) located in Paris, and while the goals are global, the focus on developing countries is strong.Developing countries oftentimes use tourism as a significant part of their income, but many countries have suffered from the environmental degradation suffered by the sudden increase in demand for resources and space."The tourism sector has been increasingly recognized as a key engine for economic growth, especially in developing and least developed countries. It is not only responsible for a significant share of world GDP (5%) and employment (6-7%), but is also an important source of foreign investment reaching as much as 30% of the world service's exports. The number of international tourist arrivals is expected to reach 1.6 billion by 2020," said Luigi Cabrini, Director for Sustainable Development of Tourism in the UNWTO.The group plans to focus on seven main areas:policy frameworks, climate change, environment and biodiversity, poverty alleviation, cultural and natural heritage, sustainable tourism practices for the private sector and finance and investments.Prior to the creation of the Partnership, several of the supporting organizations were contributing to the Green Economy Initiative, by highlighting the role that sustainable tourism plays in a more environmentally friendly future.

New Adventure Travel Website Capitalizes on "Conservation Travel" Trend

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/New-Adventure-Travel-Website-Capitalizes-on--quot-Conservation-Travel-quot--Trend/43669.html

If your travel bucket list seems to be brimming over with claws, fins, feathers, and fur, a new website promoting "conservation travel" may be a worthwhile resource to consider.SEEtheWILD.org boasts that it is the "first responsible adventure travel website that invites travelers to vacation with their favorite wild animals and help save them in the process." Vacations booked through SEEtheWILD support conservation efforts through offering an economic alternative to more destructive activities, increasing funding, and educating potential advocates for conservation. The smartly designed website allows visitors to search for their ideal vacation by animal type: wildcats, bears, birds, turtles, sharks, or whales. From there, a destination is selected with a pre-approved tour operator. As ecotourism grows in popularity, consumers and operators must do a better job of defining exactly what "ecotourism" means. For many, it is simply a marketing term meaning any vacation or trip in natural surroundings-- an easy requirement to fulfill. "Ecotourism" does have an implied suggestion of environmental and social responsibility, whether providers who use the term actually are responsible or not. Many tout ecotourism as a viable solution to the problems of environmental degradation and underdevelopment, claiming that ecotourism has the potential to enrich communities, save endangered species and threatened land, all while giving the consumer an engaging, fun experience. As tourism in nature encompasses seemingly limitless options, the ecotourism industry needs to clearly define and delineate different travel practices and standards.Due to the reality of the dynamic travel industry being far from centrally controlled, developing a single standard or definition of responsible tourism is challenging. The American Society of Travel Agents created "Ten Commandments on Eco-Tourism," the National Audubon Society has published a "Travel Ethic for Environmental Responsible Travel," and there a hodgepodge of other standards and certifications, but no international, oft-used system. For this reason, the onus is on the individual traveler.SEEtheWILD is a great filter for the conscientious traveler, as they provide information on the clearly definedcriteria they require of all tour operators, as well as detailed backgrounders on their tour operators and non-profit partners."Ecotourism" and "green travel," when used too loosely, are little more than cringeworthy buzz words employed all too often in greenwashing efforts. For many travelers and environmentalists, the concept of consumption as a prerequisite to conservation is a frustrating one. That said, at first glance, SEEtheWILD appears to be striking the right balance between providing an interesting experience to travelers while maintaining a sincere commitment to the communities they send those tourists to.Photo Credit: Keith Roper

Culture Lovers Rejoice as Grant Program Promises to Protect Rich US History

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Culture-Lovers-Rejoice-as-Grant-Program-Promises-to-Protect-Rich-US-History/43625.html

A slew of organizations along with proponents of slow, local travel will benefit from a public-private partnership aimed at preserving and promoting the diverse cultural history of the United States. The Save America's Treasures grant program recently announced $14.3 million in awards to conserve historically notable sites and collections such as author Flannery O'Connor's home, the personal papers for Jacqueline Kennedy, the restoration of Civil War flags, the oldest functioning botanical garden Read Full Article

A slew of organizations along with proponents of slow, local travel will benefit from a public-private partnership aimed at preserving and promoting the diverse cultural history of the United States. The Save America's Treasures grant program recently announced $14.3 million in awards to conserve historically notable sites and collections such as author Flannery O'Connor's home, the personal papers for Jacqueline Kennedy, the restoration of Civil War flags, the oldest functioning botanical garden in the country, the oldest continuously-operated farmers market, and an 1878 Thomas Edison tinfoil recording."These Save America's Treasures grants will preserve the physical fabric of our history and the rich diversity of America's story, as told by its artists, scholars, and other notable figures. These awards also honor the hundreds of volunteers, organizations, and communities whose energy and investment are ensuring that this national legacy endures for generations to come," said First Lady Michelle Obama.Beginning in 1999, this unique federal-private partnership which works with grantees to secure private funds matching the federal grant money, has led to the restoration of over 1,100 projects in every state and territory of the United States. The announcement of these awards preview impressive opportunities to see many artifacts and collections that were not formerly open to the general public. As local travel continues to grow in popularity, those living in the US may take advantage of the chance to discover some of the country's most intriguing pieces of cultural and intellectual history. Slow travelers will appreciate the emphasis on restoration in the program, as well as the importance of many of these sites and collections on their local communities. With a Save America's Treasures recipient in every state, there is little reason not to engage with the artists, historians, and communities who support these projects.Stephanie Meeks, the president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation emphasized the timing of the announcement during African American History Month, stating "It is important to recall the many iconic African American sites the program has helped save- from Harriet Tubman's home to Rosa Parks' bus, from Martin Luther King's Ebenezer Baptist Church to Little Rock's Central High School and Birmingham's 16th Street Baptist Church. Also it is appropriate that a number of the grants announced today will preserve places and artifacts that illuminate our nation's African American heritage."You may find a project near your home or travel destination by visiting the National Park Service's handy online database.Photo Credit: Randy Stern

Old Treasure Made New: Treasure Island to Become an Eco-City

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Old-Treasure-Made-New--Treasure-Island-to-Become-an-Eco-City/42287.html

A corner of the artificial Treasure Island is sinking into the sea. The section of Treasure Island that's still above water is mostly asphalt. Some sections are severely contaminated. However, private developers may turn the wreck into an eco-heaven, by transforming the island into a high density green city. As many as 13,000 residents could live in the new, sustainable community, which would use advanced eco technology and city planning.Mike Lynes, the conservation director of the Golden Gate Audubon Society, says the plan isn't actually green, though. The neighboring Yerba Buena island has many bird species and butterflies, and the influx of people would disturb the wildlife. High-rise buildings would harm birds, and domestic pets would attack wildlife. However, the cement on the island will be replaced with parks. The invasive species will be replaced with native plants. The San Francisco architectural firm SOM, and the development's master planner, says the development will make the area greener and more sustainable. The debate touches on an issue central to sustainable travel: with careful planning, can humans improve and sustain nature, or is the human presence always a disturbance? In this particular case, though, designers are turning a man-made island into a nature-oriented man-made island. Craig Hartman, a design partner at SOM says, the island "will be a major new sanctuary for wildlife that has not existed in the past, especially for bird life." On the one hand, savvy designers are promoting sustainable growth. On the other, wildlife preservationists are cautioning the public about the risk of development.Lynes sees no easy solution though. If growth is inevitable, taller buildings are certainly more energy efficient. If the San Francisco Bay grows upward rather than outward, it might be better for the environment.Better yet, if Treasure Island becomes a role model for successful sustainable development, and sustainable travel potential, it could help lead the way in the field. The plans include a new downtown, which will be pedestrian and bike-friendly. Streets will be angled to maximize solar energy for lighting, and climate control. Electricity will also come from wind, biogas and possibly tidal energy. All buildings will be LEED certified. An urban farm on the island will compost all the food scraps and grass bits of the residents. The Lennar Corporation proposed the eco-city in 2005, and it was building was going to begin in 2009. The presence of humans caused the seals to begin hiding out in inaccessible caves, and secrecy is the key to their survival. Fewer than 600 individuals remain (perhaps around 450), and they are one of the most endangered mammals in the world. While advocates of sustainable travel might argue that well-behaved tourists can help endangered species via donations and widespread concern, scientists disagree in this case. These particular monk seals are in serious jeopardy, and they need peace and quiet. In ancient times, seals lived on open beaches, where they gave birth, gathered together, and barked in the fresh air. However, unlike some seals, these particular monk seals are very shy, and not fond of the frolicking humans.Over the years, human disturbance (including tourism, population growth and industry) pushed the seals off the beaches and into dark, inaccessible caves.Seals give birth in the coastal caves, and therefore more pups die during storms. Their population continues to dwindle. This earless seal was once widespread, and found on beaches throughout the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and the Atlantic. The Mediterranean Monk Seal went extinct in the Sea of Marmara in the late 1990's due to heavy ship traffic. Other populations have followed suit. However, on the secret, recently discovered island, the number of annual seal pups is higher than anywhere else in the Mediterranean.Dr. Alexandros Karamanlidis, of the Mom Researchers (the name is derived from the Latin name of the species, Monachus monachus), says the seals only survived because of secluded islands around Greece. The Mom society is asking the Greek government to make the island a marine protected area.In the past, the Greek government has taken an ambiguous stance regarding the seals. In the 1970's, it's possible that oil companies used the Monk Seal Sanctuary project to encourage competition between Greek and Turkish governments and push for oil extractions. According to author William Johnson, the Greek secret service, the YPEA sabotaged the conservation project. The monks seals may be one of those sad cases in which the humans won't ever coexist happily. It's hard to say what this means for seals in the future, but at least, for now, they have a place to hide.Photo credit:ErgoSum88

SnowCarbon.co.uk Offers Sustainable Travel to the Ski Slopes (Via Train)

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/SnowCarbon-co-uk-Offers-Sustainable-Travel-to-the-Ski-Slopes--Via-Train-/41927.html

In Europe, skiers can usually access the slopes by train, and rail travel has plenty of advantages. Here's a good stat from snowcarbon: if a passenger takes the plane instead of the train from the UK to a European resort, it's equivalent to leaving a TV on standby for 22 years. And, besides the sustainable travel factor, snowcarbon offers a list of personal incentives as to why passengers should choose the train: it's scenic, family friendly, comfortable, hassle-free, and so forth.Snowcarbon offers skiers rail information, including itineraries and packages. Passengers can book seats and get deals through the site. It's not a simple booking site, though. Snowcarbon is packed with descriptions, suggestions and other details. For example, selecting "Your ideal resort", whether it's "good for families" or "gourmet restaurants" (or both) will yield a list of matches with a rating based on your priorities.Articles on the site offer suggestions such as "What to eat and drink in Austria" (including goulash, pumpkin, and garlic soup, and tafelspitz, tender boiled beef with creamed spinach and horseradish, etc). The site was founded by two journalists in an effort to spread the word about rail travel to European ski resorts, and other writers have added detailed articles regarding locations and travel options. The Internet is loaded with information, and it can be hard to find anything. With the help of snowcarbon, though, it's easy to find comprehensible sustainable travel options to the Alps. Plus, snowcarbon suggests that traveling by rail isn't just about reducing a single person's carbon footprint. If travelers choose to go-by-train, more rail holidays will become available. Supported by the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), BUGS Community Garden has the ambitious yet attainable goal of bringing sustainability to low- income areas of Birmingham. This is a fully loaded mission statement that is automatically clarified through sustainable travel to the area. Unlike other admirable programs, BUGS Community Gardens addresses ideals that serve as a foundation for a true embrace of sustainable living. By teaching students and community members the importance of community, applied math and science, and other important fundamentals, members of Birmingham's low- income areas realize the value in their natural surroundings. By instilling this feeling of pride and responsibility, principles of sustainability are then applied through the creation of community gardens. About a dozen community gardens have been created and are maintained across Birmingham. Through volunteers willing to make BUGS one of their sustainable travel stops, this program is able to continue to push the boundaries of sustainability. The image of sustainability is often that of white, affluent individuals who have plenty of disposable income to not only care about themselves, but their environment as well. African Americans or Latinos who barely make enough to pay rent aren't intuitive personas commonly associated with a sustainable lifestyle. If our society is to fully operate as a sustainable society in the future, every ethnicity and socioeconomic group must be educated about sustainable living, and each group must believe in the value of living in a way that is less detrimental to our health as well as the environment. Sustainable travel plans to Birmingham will prove to be an active step towards achieving this goal.Photo Credit: kthread

Sustainable Travel to Volunteer on a Community Farm

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Sustainable-Travel-to-Volunteer-on-a-Community-Farm/41790.html

Sustainable travel has become an incredibly popular way to travel over the past few years. What has caused the increase in popularity? There are a number of factors, but the fact that sustainable travel offers sustainable travel possibilities for so many different types of people is probably one of the leading reasons. For the sustainable traveler who prefers to gain more education about sustainability from afar, sustainable art events are a great match. For the slightly more adventurous sustainable traveler, a number of outdoor sports activities provide the perfect balance of environmental reverence and adrenaline. The environmentally conscious traveler who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty should consider volunteering at a community farm. The experience of truly becoming one with nature while working alongside community members is memorable, to say the least. A promising number of community farms continue to pop up all over the world. If your travels take you to the Chicago area, volunteer with the City Farm.Located between two of Chicago's most vibrant neighborhoods, Cabrini- Green and Gold Coast, City Farm is a community lead and operated community farm. Through hard work and diligence, City Farm produces delicious and nutritious vegetables for both communities. Produce such as beets, carrots, arugula, herbs, and much more are grown at City Farm and then distributed amongst neighboring communities. This truly sustainable urban farm upholds the principles of sustainable farming, including the need for compost, with an urban flair. Favorite Chicago restaurants such as Frontera Grill & Topolobampo, North Pond, and Lula Caf have joined in the mission to promote community farming through City Farm. Trimmings and "wasted" food from some of Chicago's most renowned, five star restaurants are brought to City Farms where volunteers transform the excess materials into composted soil, which is then used to grow more vegetables. In addition to its reverence for sustainable farming, City Farm also believes in community involvement. To live in a real sustainable world requires one to treat both the environment and fellow community members with care, and volunteering at City Farm will surely enforce these principles.Volunteers are always welcomed at City Farm, but more volunteers are needed during the harvesting seasons of spring and fall. Embarking on your sustainable travel adventures with a group? City Farm warmly welcomes volunteer groups of all ages and sustainable knowledge levels. Volunteer educators are often on board to provide educational workshops for prospective sustainable farmers, transforming this experience from a solely volunteerism experience to a learning experience.City Farm is one of the many community farms around the world that is taking the lead as our society continues to embrace sustainable living. If dirt, bugs, and compost don't make you squirm, consider volunteering with an organization like City Farm.Photo Credit: katerha

Eco Friendly Destination Feature: Nihiwatu Resort Reduces Local Malaria

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Eco-Friendly-Destination-Feature--Nihiwatu-Resort-Reduces-Local-Malaria/41829.html

Near the resort, Nihiwatu, on the island of Sumba, Indonesia, the Pasola ritual occurs in February and March. Blood is necessary to make the ground fertile for the rice harvests in April and May. In the old days, wounded persons were without a medical clinic. Now, due to the efforts of Nihiwatu, there are five clinics in the area to help with medical problems. The owners of Nihiwatu founded the Sumba Foundation to help the islanders. Thanks to medical clinics and clean water, the resort has been credited for raising the life expectancy of more than 20,000 people living in nearby villages. Malaria infection rates have been reduced by 85% in regions of West Sumba. The Sumba Foundation also opened a malaria training center in 2010, and they will graduate over 100 students this year, which will help diagnose hundreds of thousands of cases in the area.A large part of funding for the Sumba Foundation comes from their guests. Including, actually, as the founder notes in a recent video, the children who visit. Children who visit sometimes start fundraisers at home, mail duffel bags of toothbrushes, and work with the community to install malaria nets. Many visitors to remote resort of Nihiwatu are touched by the Sumbanese, and make donations to the Sumba Foundation. In the past few years, the locals have also begun farming. When the founders of Nihiwatu arrived twenty years ago, there were no farms, though the slash and burn method was used. Cassava, supplemented with corn and rice, is the primary diet of the Sumbanese. Cassava is a low-protein starch with roots that contain poisonous compounds. This results in chronic protein deficiencies and malnutrition. The Sumba Foundation is seeking donations for water pumps and tractors to help the islanders learn to farm and improve their diet. Nihiwatu, meanwhile, raises poultry and vegetables and passes along farming knowledge to locals.Recently, Nihiwatu received the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards for helping the local population and undertaking conservation projects. Nihiwatu is powered by bio-fuel and built from sustainable resources. The resort has planted over 64,000 trees for their carbon offset program. Everything is recycled, making Nihiwatu is an eco-friendly destination, through and through.Meanwhile, the Sumbanese carry on the traditions of their ancestors. Their main goal is to maintain a healthy relationship with the Marapu, or ancestral spirits. Providing ancestors with food and wealth in the afterlife means prosperity for the living. Up until recently, when a nobleman died, hundreds of water buffalo, horses, dogs and pigs were slaughtered. In the old days, many families would bankrupt themselves to put on a show. Today, though, the government limits the slaughtering to five animals (though the rule is not always obeyed). Even with the influx of education, healthcare, and tourists, tradition reigns in Sumba.Image Courtesy of Nihiwatu

Sustainable Travel- Oakland Style

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Sustainable-Travel--Oakland-Style/41778.html

Despite what economists and news pundits may have to say, this is an exciting time in history, and part of the excitement is directly related to sustainable travel. With sustainable travel as mode of transportation change, cities and towns previously associated with nothing more than violence and corruption are now joining in the fight to preserve nature and are emerging as sustainable powerhouses. One such city is Oakland, California. Most think of Oakland and its alarming crime statistics and the infamous football player who was virtually inescapable in the mid- nineties. With the election of key forward thinkers, Oakland is stepping into a new decade as a city with dramatically decreased crime rates, flourishing economy, and more importantly, a new reverence for sustainable living. A specific organization in this rejuvenated city is spearheading the effort and is worth consideration for your next sustainable travel itinerary.Urban Village is an organization out of Oakland that is dedicated to bringing farmers' market products to the streets of Oakland. California is largely known for its high produce standards in both the sustainable and conventional farming realms, but like so many other urban, less gentrified cities, Oakland is rarely included in this assumption. It is for this reason that financial support through sustainable travel is needed for Urban Village, to send a message to the rest of the economy that, when exposed to the ideals of sustainable living, urban and un- gentrified environments deserve sustainably produced products as well.Sustainable travel to Urban Village is sure to satiate your appetite as well as quench your thirst for knowledge about sustainability. Urban Village offers an exciting farmers' market atmosphere that is perfect for the whole family. Urban Village attendants are enthusiastic about answering questions about sustainability and sustainable farming, so be sure to inquire to your hearts' content. Kids and adults alike will love the ample samples available at Urban Village, which makes for a fun visit that includes trying products for the first time. While food is usually the main attraction at a farmers' market, Urban Village seeks to support all of its local sustainable producers, even those who produce arts, crafts, and paintings. Vendors from all over the community bring their best creations to the farmers'' market. In addition to an exciting shopping experience and wealth of information, Urban Village also hosts several entertainment events throughout the year. Experiencing the excitement of a farmers' market while listening to the sounds of local musicians creates a memorable farmers' market experience for everyone.Sustainable travel should not be exclusive to the upper echelons of society. It is only when the principles of sustainable living reach ears of every economic class that true adoption of sustainability will occur. Urban Village seems to effortlessly show the rest of the country the sustainability is crossing barriers and bringing communities together for the sake of our environment.Photo Credit: joefutrelle

Using Sustainable Travel to Combat Obesity

Travel

http://www.justmeans.com/Using-Sustainable-Travel-to-Combat-Obesity/41774.html

Sustainable travel has myriad applications and associations. Typically, sustainable travel is thought to be exclusive to modes of transportation or avoiding the use of non- biodegradable materials during a trip. While such associations are certainly a welcomed application of sustainable travel, trite perceptions of sustainable travel are just a chip off of the steadily melting iceberg. Our country has become known as one of the most obese nations in the free world, and by the looks of advertising agencies with glossy marketing ads, it appears that we are proud of such a reputation. To make matters worse, the grim statistics of obesity seem to be most prevalent amongst the younger portions of our population. A population with an ever- expanding waistband means more than bigger pants; it also means more exhaust of our natural resources. Our nation isn't obese from an excessive consumption of natural fruits and vegetables. It is the genetically modified food that must accept the blame for this epidemic, and the same source must accept the blame for the environmental toll associated with the production of these toxic chemicals. If we know that the production of organic goods are not only better for the environment but for our families as well, why not promote their value by planning a trip to a local farmers' market? With more farmers' markets staying open year- round, the opportunities to change your child's ideas about food at a pivotal moment are plentiful. Almost 20% of children under the age of 19 are considered to obese, so the need for a healthier image of eating and producing could not come at a better time. Before embarking on your sustainable travel to share the gospel of organic and local food with your child, keep a few things in mind. First of all, it is best to check out the website of the farmers' market you are thinking about visiting. Some farmers' markets are more involved in the shopping experience than others, and since your aim is to excite children about eating healthy foods that are not too taxing on the environment when produced, it's best to visit a farmers' market with an equally exciting atmosphere. Once you have selected a farmers' market that you know will provide a fun atmosphere for your children, plan to make their trip to the farmers' market unlike any other shopping trip. Fully engage your child in the entire process, from explaining the origins of the products (ask a sales attendant if unsure) to weighing the products to estimating the cost of the products. By inviting your children to participate, you are not only equipping them with the knowledge of eating healthy, sustainably produced foods, but you are also giving them the confidence to make the right decisions.A trip to the farmers' market with your children will be less taxing on your child's body as well as our environment, and that is a quite a winning combination.Photo Credit: Klardrommar
