Florence, 1 June 2009 - With its reputation as the leading Biomass event for a specialist audience, the European Biomass Conference & Exhibition has proved to be a great knowledge exchange platform for the whole biomass sector. The 17th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition will be held in Germany, a country where Biomass utilisation and the market deployment of derived energy products is actively promoted at governmental and institutional levels along with other sources of Renewables. The event will take place at the CCH - Congress Center Hamburg in the heart of the cosmopolitan city of Hamburg from 29 June to 3 July 2009 and will be chaired by Giovanni Federigo De Santi, Director of the Institute for Energy (IE), Joint Research Centre (JRC) - European Commission.
Discussing the future of Biomass
The 17th Biomass Conference & Exhibition provides a critical context for where the leading biomass areas are developing and why, so that the attendees can identify the right projects and technologies and build the right relationships. The event will allow the attendees to discuss the various production aspects and uses of biomass and it's interactions, especially regarding transport, heat and electricity but also for other uses such as bio-materials and green chemistry. The exchange of knowledge shall provide new data and information on biomass resources in order to address the challenges of resource availability and mobilization, biomass conversion, market implementation and bionergy policies whilst respecting sustainability principles.
"The 17th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition this year will be the most important event for all aspects of Biomass and a good opportunity to review the developments in policy, markets, industry, technology, research and education," says De Santi and continues: we expect the results of this 17th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition will support the European Union's specific targets for Renewable Energy for 2020 and the implementation of the corresponding actions. I expect this meeting to be also an opportunity to discuss the status and challenges of National and Regional Biomass Action Plans, biofuels as well as the role of bioenergy in initiatives such as the European Strategic Energy Technologies Plan - SET Plan", says De Santi.

Mr. De Santi amplifies: "As Chairman of the 17th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, I believe that this meeting will help us to better understand the key issues associated with the sustainable production and use of Biomass and in particular its implications on the tropical world, for example in Latin-America, Asia and Africa. I am also pleased to highlight the importance of the 2009 Bonn Agreement about the creation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). I am convinced that on our departure from Hamburg we will find new stimuli to address the energy and climate change challenges we are facing today and in the future."
Jean Francois Dallemand and Heinz Ossenbrink, European Commission, Joint Research Centre, ISPRA and Technical Programme Coordinators say: "The European Biomass Conference has demonstrated itself to be a key event for the biomass community from Europe. As an international platform it also attracts communities from all over the world, especially from North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa. These regions are closely interconnected with Europe through the issues of imports, global trade, WTO mechanisms and aid policy. Conference Programme
The 17th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition covers the whole range of Biomass related topics from Biomass Resources, Conversion Processes, Biofuels to Markets and Policies. It is a global event in both senses: Covering the Biomass topics from around the world and assessing each topic in detail.
The event offers about 270 plenary and oral presentations as well as 600 visual presentations. Plenary speakers from all over the world will be present and give an insight in their research and work in the field of bioenergy. Jean Franςois Dallemand and Heinz Ossenbrink confirm: At this year's Conference one main focus will be on biofuels as about 40 contributions (15%) of the 270 plenary and oral presentations will deal with various aspects of the biofuels sector. Several of them are highly sophisticated research and engineering issues, others going to the point of interest of politicians, developers and implementers.

The Biomass Conference and Exhibition as an international platform for the exchange of opinions and knowledge on a professional level is known for the fact that all research, demonstration and application results in the biofuels field are assessed on the occasion of the Conference. All issues are presented and discussed and all future biofuels perspectives are evaluated.
BIOMASS
Amongst the announced experts, plenary speaker Véronique Hervouet, TOTAL Senior Vice President, Investments, Energy Ventures and Bioenergy Senior Advisor and Chair of the Steering Committee of the European Biofuels Technology Platform will discuss how the European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative (EIBI) should support the demonstration and early industrial deployment of innovative & sustainable value chains. The presentation will focus on the question as to how the EIBI can boost the contribution of sustainable bioenergy to EU climate and energy objectives, with a focused approach leveraging public private partnership to manage risks and share financing.
As a further renowned plenary speaker of the 17th Biomass Conference & Exhibition Prof. Nikolay Vedernikovs, Head of Laboratory from the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry will present the latest developments in the sector of the Bioethanol and Furfural Common Production from Hardwood. Prof. Vedernikov was amongst others the leading expert in furfural production in the USSR and supervised all the experiments and implementation of his and other state-of-the-art technologies.
In addition to the presentations the attendees will be able to attend policy reviews, the Technical Exhibition, a social programme and workshops. As an integral part of the Conference's side events a wide range of workshops will give an overview about ongoing biomass-projects, policy framework and the newest biomasstechnologies. The Technical Tours and the Technical Exhibition allow the attendees to get a direct insight in the various uses of biomass and the latest developments in this area.
Two guided technical tours will take place on Friday 3rd July 2009. Technical Tour 1 will lead the visitors to the Biogas plant of the BioWerk Hamburg GmbH & Co. KG. where they can follow among other things the collection and disposal of waste from supermarkets (expired foodstuff), household waste and food leftover from restaurants. Technical Tour 2 with the title "Microalgae" focuses on the pilotplant of the Strategic Science Consult GmbH for the development of technologies for the large scale production of microalgae (Project TERM). In the context of the Technical Exhibition the exhibition of biomass products, utilization and conversion technologies will give a further impetus to a continuing and sustainable development of the global markets in the Biomass energy technology and will be open free of charge to all visitors interested in biomass.
Exhibitors
One of the this year's exhibitors at the 17th Biomass Conference & Exhibition will be Dyadic Netherlands BV. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dyadic International Inc., having its headquarters in Jupiter, Florida (USA), Dyadic develops and produces enzymes for applications in the Biofuels, Biorefinery, Textile, Paper and Pulp, Feed, and other industries. At their facility in Wageningen, The Netherlands, fungal micro-organisms and processes for the production of enzymes and high value proteins are being developed. The technology developed by Dyadic Netherlands BV has attracted the interest of some major players in the biofuel industry.
As well the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) will be represented as exhibitor and local supporter at the 17th Biomass Conference & Exhibition. HAW has established a Competence Center on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CC4E). The Competence Center 4E (CC 4E) supports and coordinates activities within the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) for cooperations with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency industry. The research activities of the Competence Center extend over research fields such as Biogas (Fermentation), Biofuel (biomass to liquid), Solar hot water, Geothermal energy and Photovoltaics. HAW has been extensively involved in technical research and implementation of stateof- the-art renewable energy technologies and is a leading institution in terms of education and awareness-raising on renewable energy.
MWM GmbH, one of the world's leading providers of highly efficient and eco-friendly energy generation plants, welcomes the attendees of the Biomass Conference to the exhibition. Based in Mannheim, Germany, the enterprise can look back on more than 130 years of experience in the development and optimization of combustion engines for natural gas, special gases and diesel fuel. MWM GmbH develops high-performance, state-of-the-art products, services and technologies for a decentralized power supply based on gas and diesel engines. In addition MWM GmbH is offering consulting, development and production of one-stop solutions customised for the individual customer and consulting services during operations.
Among the this year's exhibitors Turboden will be one of the Italian representatives. The company has nearly 30 years experience in designing, manufacturing, bringing to market and maintaining Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbogenerators for the generation of heat and electrical power from renewable sources - including solar energy, biomass, geothermal and waste heat. The principle of Turboden ORC technology is similar to a traditional steam turbine with one real difference. Instead of water vapor, the ORC system vaporizes an organic fluid, offering superior electric performance and several mechanical advantages: slower rotation of the turbine, lower pressure and no erosion of the metallic parts and blades. Today, Turboden is the number one manufacturer and supplier of biomass-based ORC systems (200kWel-3MWel) with 94 plants operating in the world and 30 under construction.
Biomass Awards
During the Opening Session on Monday the 29th of June 2009 the Linneborn Prize will be awarded for the tenth time. The Johannes Linneborn Prize was established in 1994 for outstanding contributions to the development of energy from biomass, attained over a long period of continuous achievements. Johannes Linneborn, who lived 1899-1991, was a pioneer in modern biomass utilization.
As another programme highlight the Board of Directors of EUBIA (European Biomass Industry Association) will present for the seventh time the EUBIA Award for the advancement of Biomass Industry. The prize is aimed to award an industry representative who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the Biomass industry and its market.
One of the highlights of the Closing Session will be the awarding ceremony of the most outstanding visual presentations (Poster Awards). A jury of experts evaluate all posters on the basis of the scientific value of the illustrated work, the clear presentation of results and the visual parallels between text, figures and tables. The winning presentations will be announced, illustrated and awarded in the main auditorium during the Closing Session on Friday 3rd July 2009.
The event organiser ETA-Florence Renewable Energies and WIP - Renewable Energies announce that the high number of contributions which have been submitting for this Conference and the many inquiries for participation give good reason to forecast that 1,500 delegates from over 60 countries will be present.
