Description:

Identifying and Implementing Sustainable Solutions

In the past two decades, China has experienced tremendous economic growth and rapid urbanisation. While this progress has been responsible for a substantial reduction in poverty, it has also had significant environmental consequences. The challenges facing China -- now probably the world's single biggest producer of greenhouse gases -- reflect a new global reality and a major dilemma for fast-growing economies, accentuated by the current financial crisis. How can the environment and cleaner energy remain a priority when the economy is under pressure and oil prices are low?

This major agenda-setting Summit will bring together senior officials from governments and multilateral institutions, environmentalists, investors and industrialists to discuss sustainable and economically feasible solutions that could have a major impact on international efforts to fight global warming.

Topics will include:
  • China's growth, its environmental impact, and Beijing's policy response
  • Wind power, solar energy and other sustainable solutions
  • The water shortage: solutions and models from abroad
  • Eco-Cities: the sustainable answer to massive urbanisation?
  • Clean technology: the role of the banks, green funds and venture capital
  • Carbon trading: China's potential leading role in a booming market
